About the iPGCE

The International Postgraduate Certificate in Education (iPGCE) is a blended learning programme that helps further the careers of education professionals, working outside the UK.

With the number of international schools increasing year by year, there’s a growing demand for high quality teachers to fill teaching positions. If you’re working as a Teaching Assistant, HLTA, unqualified teacher or in another relevant school support role, you may be eligible to undertake the iPGCE and progress your career.

Validated by the University of East London, Tes Institute’s iPGCE takes one academic year to complete and leads to the award of an International Postgraduate Certificate in Education (iPGCE).

It is delivered through a mix of online and school-based learning, face-to-face development and in country tutor support (dependent upon your location). You’ll undertake a combination of online and interactive study sessions, learning tasks, virtual seminars, work-place and online supported learning.


The iPGCE programme aims to help you:

  • Develop a level of professional competence equivalent to that of a new teacher
  • Become an empowered, reflective practitioner and manager in education who can be an agent of change
  • Critically engage with a wide range of education issues from a multidisciplinary subject/phase perspective
  • Develop models of good practice by drawing on a range of literature and comparing your own teaching practice to existing good practice models, identifying and setting potential areas for your professional development
  • Build upon your professional experience to link theory with research, policy and practice in international education and development

Successful completion of this Tes Institute programme leads to the award of International Postgraduate Certificate in Education by University of East London.

Course delivery

You will study for your iPGCE both in-school and online, with in-school development, experience and support accompanied by online, on-demand materials, tools and feedback.

  • Primary
  • All main secondary subjects

Your specialist pathway tutor

You’ll need support along the way to achieving your iPGCE and an important part of this will be from your specialist pathway tutor. Your appointed pathway tutor will guide you and work with you face-to-face, in-school* and online throughout your course. All iPGCE pathway tutors are highly experienced education professionals and specialise in developing qualified and unqualified teachers. They are qualified teachers themselves and have held school leadership positions previously, so they understand the sector extremely well and can offer relevant, impartial, practical advice and support.

Your school mentor

Your school mentor will also support and mentor you throughout your iPGCE programme. Your mentor will be a suitable member of staff from your employing school, appointed by them to work closely with you to make sure that you’re working to your approved personal preparation plan and keeping on schedule. Your school mentor will have experience of coaching and supporting new teachers.

They will also play an essential role in facilitating your programme and making sure that your school and pathway tutor are working together, and that your school is accommodating your needs throughout your training.

Online support

Throughout your programme, you’ll have guided access to Tes Institute’s online platform, Learn. You’ll also be able to ask questions, read about other people’s experiences and communicate directly with your personal pathway tutor.

Programme Structure

Your programme will consist of two core modules that blend applied teaching theory with practice, focusing on the relevant aspects of the professional role of a teacher as well as the aligned Teachers’ Standards.

All work will be assessed against the learning outcomes for each module. You’ll have the opportunity to explore key features of learning and teaching in the context of international school systems, while developing your own practice through critical engagement and research on practice in your online learning modules.

Entry criteria

You should be a self-motivated person with the desire to progress your teaching career and the ability to meet the following entry criteria:

  • Be in a teaching role by the time you start the programme in a school where the working language is English
  • Have the express agreement of your current or intended employer (school) to support you through your iPGCE programme along with the appointment of a suitable in school mentor
  • Hold a degree awarded by a UK University or a recognised degree equivalent qualification
  • Have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C/4 (under the new grading system) or above at GCSE level in English and Mathematics or, if not, an equivalent standard in an equivalent NARIC certified qualification. If you intend to teach pupils aged 3-11 you will also need to have grade C/4 or above at GCSE level science
  • If English is not your first language, you must achieve IELTS 6.5 or equivalent (no less than 6.0 in any element). English language qualifications must have been completed no more than two years prior to the programme start date. IELTS also cannot be used as an equivalency for GCSE English.
  • Have the health and physical capacity to teach
  • Have day-to-day access to a computer and the internet and regular access to a classroom context


iPGCE and your school

You must have the commitment of your employing school. Their responsibilities include:

  • A willingness to work in partnership with Tes Institute
  • Discussing, negotiating and agreeing your personal preparation plan and timeline with your pathway tutor
  • Providing you with the support and resources you need to complete the programme
  • Appointing a suitable member of school staff to act as your school mentor (this person should have some experience of coaching new teachers)

 Support offered from Tes Institute

We provide a range of support for your school and school mentor on how to facilitate the programme, support you and monitor your progress. This support and professional advice is delivered in the school by a pathway tutor and online via our virtual learning platform, Learn.

Start dates

The iPGCE programme is part-time, and we expect you to be studying for approximately one academic year to complete it.
