Biology, Chemistry and Physics SKE

If you want to become a better science teacher before or alongside your teacher training then our online subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses can help.

These fully funded subject knowledge enhancement courses are designed for trainee science teachers who are training to teach Biology, Chemistry or Physics who need to upgrade their subject knowledge. If you lack confidence in your subject knowledge or your Initial Teacher Training provider has requested that you complete an SKE course to enhance your knowledge then you can begin one of our online courses starting every month.

Covering key topic areas in each science subject, our Biology, Chemistry and Physics SKE courses are 100% online- allowing you to improve your subject knowledge at a time that suits you. You will be supported by a subject specialist Pathway Tutor who will help you progress through the course as well as coaching your science subject knowledge and skill development.

Available SKE courses

Our Chemistry and Physics SKE courses are available in a range of course lengths between eight and 28 weeks and Biology is available up to 16 weeks. Each course covers key concepts and practical techniques that will not only improve your knowledge but also provide you with some inspiration for teaching in the classroom. Your chosen SKE subject must match the subject that you are training to teach in.

What science SKE content is available?

Our online science SKE courses content can be tailored to your subject knowledge needs depending on your programme length. You will complete a subject knowledge audit at the start of your course and this will help your Pathway Tutor to advice you which sessions you should focus on.

Funding your SKE programme

The Government will cover the entire cost of your science subject knowledge enhancement course so long as you have received a conditional offer of a place on a Biology, Chemistry or Physics teacher training course. This course funding is provided by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and is currently guaranteed until August 2017.

How does our online SKE work?

Our science subject knowledge enhancement courses allow you to study and work at a time that suits you because they are delivered 100% online, making it easier to fit learning around any commitments at home and at work. Whilst the focus of an SKE course is on improving subject knowledge, the course will also feature science related pedagogy sessions that will provide you with an insight into how your subject should be taught in the classroom.

Once you complete your course you will be awarded a certificate and given feedback on your strengths and areas for further development during your initial teacher training.

Why choose TES Institute?
