Becoming a Primary school teacher through Straight to Teaching
Helen Horner – from HLTA to Primary school class teacher
“The transition from HLTA to primary school teacher was challenging but I was constantly supported and encouraged by my pathway tutor”
After working as an HLTA and covering lessons I decided that I wanted to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to become a teacher. It was important to find a course that allowed me to learn and continue earning at the same time and whilst I considered distance learning, Straight to Teaching was the best fit for me.
The online elements were great and available at all hours of the day. Sticking to a timetable kept me organised and balancing two different roles would have been difficult if it wasn’t for the support that I received. My Pathway Tutor was invaluable, she encouraged me whenever I found anything difficult and was available by email and text if required. Knowing that she would be observing and assessing my progress also spurred me on.
I am delighted with the progress that I made and feel that my teaching and subject knowledge has greatly improved since starting the course. For the pupils, it was equally beneficial as they already knew me so did not have to get used to a new member of staff and it minimalised disruption to their learning.
I would definitely recommend Straight to Teaching as it offers an alternative way to become a teacher. Since gaining QTS one of my colleagues has joined the programme and others are looking into the route.
