Are you struggling to recruit the right staff for specialist subjects?
Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement for Teachers (SKEfT) programme is designed to help your in-service teachers update or develop their current subject knowledge or to train to teach other specialist subjects.
These in-depth, post-ITT SKE courses can help you increase the number of subject specialist teachers without having to recruit additional staff. The fully online courses are available in Biology, Chemistry, Computing, French, Geography German, Maths, Physics or Spanish.
Who should apply?
These courses are available to any teachers at your school who are able to teach at least two lessons (towards the end of the course) in their chosen SKE subject.
At the start of the programme your teacher will be appointed a subject specialist personal pathway tutor. They will mentor and work with the teacher to create an agreed learning plan and coach their subject knowledge and skill development. As an experienced teacher, they will guide and support them and will be able to provide hints and tips to try in the classroom.
Your teacher's subject knowledge will be assessed throughout the course and there are compulsory SKE checkpoints to ensure that they are engaging with the programme and making good progress. Their pathway tutor will provide them with regular feedback to support their development and critical reflection skills.
The final task involves the teacher planning two lessons, teaching them, gaining feedback from pupils and writing a self-reflected, detailed evaluation of their lessons.
Why choose Subject Knowledge Enhancement for Teachers?
Our SKEfT courses will help your teachers:
- Gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of their subject and associated specialist pedagogy
- Develop critical reflection skills
- Acquire some of the tools to become an outstanding teacher
- Gain confidence in teaching their chosen subject to pupils aged 11-16
- Get experience of action research and evaluating impact on pupil progress to help with career progression
- Discover innovative ideas, techniques and activities to use in the classroom
Our courses are delivered 100% online so that your teachers can fit learning around their existing school and personal commitments. Each programme is made up of approximately 15 on-demand sessions, designed by teachers for teachers, to provide them with relevant and engaging content and lesson ideas.
How long does it take to complete?
It will take your teacher roughly 42 weeks to complete an SKE for teachers course, based on them spending roughly seven hours learning each week.
To increase the flexibility of the course for busy working teachers, they will be given up to one year to complete their course. On completion of the course, they will have one additional month of access to online materials.
