About Ark Walworth Academy

Walworth Academy opened in September 2007, after taking over from the previous Walworth School. Walworth Academy has  been recognised by the Specialist Schools and Academy Trust for being one of the top 10 schools for value added in terms of 5 A*-C (including English and maths) improvement in the country.

School Structure and Community

The academy has six forms of entry (180 students in each year) and opened a sixth form of 200 students in 2010.

In January 2010, the academy moved into brand new school buildings. They provide modern facilities for academic teaching, including engineering and technology, as well as art, drama, music, PE and a wide range of sports. The whole layout has been carefully designed and built to be light, friendly and accessible.

The Walworth community is a thriving and exciting one in the heart of London, providing unique opportunities for our students which we aim to explore both inside and outside the classroom. We are proud of the diversity of opportunity such a rich community provides us with, both in terms of academic pathways and enrichment opportunities, and we seek to maximise this for all within the Walworth Academy family of learners.

At Walworth, our goal is to ensure our students go on to be successful adults, enabled to take up their place in the world, and confident in facing the challenges and opportunities that may bring. We look forward to welcoming the next generation of children who are excited and motivated by that prospect.

Aims, Vision and Values

Walworth Academy believes in the immense potential of each student and is committed to giving them every possible opportunity to succeed. Every student should leave the academy with real choices: to continue into further and higher education or pursue the career of their choice.

The academy has high expectations for pupil behaviour and achievement and equally high expectations for the quality of teaching in the classroom. This means a common commitment to creating a respectful and orderly environment where teachers can teach and students can learn.

Walworth Academy recognises the need to support every child – academically, socially and emotionally. Through a combination of rigorous and engaging classes and a variety of learning experiences outside of the classroom, students can enjoy the full range of opportunities.

The academy is shaped by its culture of inclusion and mutual respect, which encourages a close working relationship between students and staff. The academy is working hard to provide an inspirational and secure environment which recognises and celebrates success whilst challenging students to realise their full potential.

Ark Walworth Academy CARES

Commitment Maximum effort in everything you do – all the time with no excuses

Aspiration Always strive to be better, constantly reaching beyond your limits

Resilience Never give up – keep pushing and keep trying

Excellence Be the best you can be every day. Have pride and confidence in your success

Self-Management Do the right thing – never have to be asked

Walworth Academy is committed to equipping their students with the qualifications and skills necessary to succeed in a fast-changing, technology-rich world.

They offer our students a broad range of subjects that provide high quality learning experiences suited to their ability and adapted to their preferred ways of learning. On completion, these qualifications will provide many opportunities for future studies or open up a wide range of possible career pathways.

The academy approach is “depth before breath”: the benefits of a broad curriculum depend on a sound foundation. Pupils are expected to reach or exceed their expected year level in English and mathematics as soon as possible. They believe passionately that this provides a strong foundation for every other subject and is critical for success at school and in life.

To achieve this, Walworth Academy offers individualised support and gives all pupils access to a range of qualifications. Those making rapid progress have opportunities for early entry to exams. Where appropriate, pupils spend time in smaller groups or nurture classes that focus on numeracy and literacy.

You can find out more about our approach to curriculum here.

The academy has specialist status in mathematics and health. All ARK schools specialise in mathematics and ARK invests to attract and retain the best maths teachers. We support and coach pupils so that all can become confident mathematicians, at ease with both theoretical and practical applications.

The health specialism will provide academic and vocational routes into higher and further education, training and work experience in science, medicine and business related fields. The design and delivery of the specialism will be developed with Southwark Primary Care Trust.

Walworth Academy was inspected by Ofsted in January 2018 and was graded as "good". You can read the full report here
