Mr Roger Oates
At Billanook, we truly believe that every student is important. In a nurturing and committed learning environment, our students gain a quiet confidence to flourish and to discover their own personal best – whatever that may be.
The relationship between staff, student and family is essential for successful learning. We foster this relationship to ensure that the individual needs of each child are understood and catered for.
So what makes a successful school? It is an important question to ponder as it is at the centre of what we do at Billanook College. The key ingredient is great staff. A school becomes a “good school” on this measure only because it has great staff who are performing well in and outside the classroom. Great staff “make the student matter”.
Throughout this comes the common theme of our relationships with students. Staff perform at their best when they are encouraged by keen students so good schools have a strong culture of excellent behaviour. Students’ behaviour depends on many factors. These include: a keen sense of self-worth; good positive peer-group friendships and connections; a strong feeling of connectedness and belonging (and being loved) at school and at home and an awareness of being capable of succeeding at things outside the classroom. This is why independent schools strongly promote pastoral care and co-curricular activities to enhance belonging, connectedness and strong positive relationships. At Billanook College the role of every staff member in pastoral care is critical. It is at the core of what we do.
As a school our aim is to develop a dynamic and caring learning community which fosters the growth of the whole being of each girl and boy – in mind, body and spirit with a vision to provide a range of pathways to lifelong learning. Our mission goes beyond academic excellence. It is our express intention to develop graduates who are dynamic, caring and optimistic who have a passion for learning and will value the virtues of wisdom and integrity. They will be individuals who endeavour to positively transform the communities in which they live and work. In the great and the small things they do, they will enliven and enrich our world.
Billanook College is set on 15 hectares of sweeping lawns and natural bushland which encapsulates Brushy Creek. Our buildings and facilities play an important role in creating a positive, productive learning and working environment and include flexible learning and working spaces, a state of the art 450 seat auditorium, on site cafe and health club.
Early Learning: The Early Learning Program for three and four year old children invites them to participate in an open learning community where the natural wonder, curiosity and questioning of young children are guided through play to exploration and discovery, while they develop social connections.
We recognise every child will take a unique learning path during their growth and development. The Early Learning Program at Billanook College will nurture and develop individual needs, interests and abilities, whilst developing important communication and language (literacy) skills.
Primary School: The curriculum in the Primary School at Billanook College is designed to enable students to achieve success in attaining their maximum educational development by catering for individual differences and needs. The curriculum is implemented in a vibrant and engaging environment where the children develop a love for life-long learning.
Middle School: The Middle Years is a time when strengthening the fundamentals of early education is paramount. Our staff will encourage and build confidence in students so they think critically and creatively, solve problems effectively, and seek sources of personal inspiration.
Our Learning Framework enhances the skills and knowledge of every learning experience – broadening the mind and encouraging lateral thinking. Our commitment to serving others with compassion creates a safe but challenging environment for students as they progress through their unique learning journey.
Senior School: As students continue along their learning pathway and get closer to the world outside Billanook, we encourage and support them to take an interest in and responsibility for their learning program.
The breadth of Senior School studies means that students can follow their interests and passions and create their future.
We understand the overwhelming decisions that Senior Students have to make, and we offer pastoral support through individualised mentoring, as well as academic and careers advice from trained professionals. An atmosphere of positivity encourages students to make informed decisions for their future – whatever that may be.
