About Canford School
Situated in 250 acres of landscaped grounds near Wimborne, Dorset, Canford is among the top co-educational boarding schools in the UK. The school is enjoying the highest school roll in its history, with 640 pupils aged 13-18 years, of whom 70% are boarders. Academic results have been recognised as a leader nationally in recent years - among the top 5 co-educational boarding schools at A level (The Daily Telegraph) and among the top 50 at A*/A (www.best-schools.co.uk). 86% of leavers moved on to Russell Group, Top 15 and Ivy League universities this year, with 57 places gained at Oxbridge over the past five.
As the Good Schools Guide points out ‘A very special school and one that can easily hold its own with the most popular in the country’ and it was recently awarded runner up ‘Public School of the Year’ by Tatler. As a relatively young school, founded 1923, Canford blends tradition with forward-thinking. The Grade 1 listed manor house is complemented by a range of exceptional modern buildings including a sports centre, theatre, Real Tennis court and boathouse.
Canford combines academic achievement with a diverse co-curricular programme of intellectual, cultural and sporting activities. The environment encourages participation, hard work and a strong sense of community and integrity. Pupils who thrive are those eager to embrace the wide range of opportunities. Success is evident outside the classroom as well as within it, including GB rowers, England Hockey players, county rugby and hockey championship teams and ABRSM diploma achievers. Importance is placed on educating pupils to appreciate the coherence between and connections across their learning experiences in a wide range of contexts.
Few schools are fortunate to have such a beautiful setting as Canford – The Week voted it the ‘Best School Setting’ in the UK last year – and it offers an enjoyable, stimulating and inspirational atmosphere in which to work. The pastoral side of the school is very strong and applicants should be willing to play a full part in the thriving co-curricular life.
With its first-rate teaching, stunning setting and innovative ideas, Canford is definitely at the top of its game.- The Good Schools Guide
Canford School provides a very high quality of education for its pupils, who achieve excellent public examination results, exhibit exemplary attitudes to learning, and show outstanding commitment to their busy lives, in and out of the classroom.- Independent Schools Inspectorate
Teaching at Canford is immensely rewarding. If you join us here, you will be joining many generations of teachers who have found enormous value and personal fulfilment in sharing their lives with a vibrant and warm community. Like many others in the Common Room, I joined the school thinking I would spend just a few years of my career here. But I was caught by the Canford magic, and now can’t really imagine being anywhere else.- Dr Stephen Wilkinson, Director of Studies
