About East London Science School (ELSS)
East London Science School is a mixed, comprehensive, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form situated in Bromley-by-Bow, East London. It is a free school that is part of a single-academy trust, the East London Science School Trust. The school will provide 1,000 places for secondary and sixth-form students between the ages of 11 and 18 when fully subscribed.
East London Science School was opened as a new provision in September 2013.
Values and vision
The East London Science School vision is based on six beliefs: all children are worthy of the best possible education; science education is fundamental to a well-rounded education; teachers must be able to open children’s minds through high-quality teaching; pupils who are inquisitive are the true measures of critical thinkers; pupils must nurture their own skills while developing new ones; and success can be judged by the impact that students have upon the outside world.
Despite its strong focus on science, the secondary school provides a well-rounded education that gives pupils a strong foundation for proceeding into higher education.
“Leaders and governors have a strong vision founded on high expectations, a science-focused curriculum and dynamic teaching. They all understand this vision and the school has made a strong start in fulfilling its aim. An outstanding programme of educational visits and trips supports the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students extremely well. Other activities, such as the school’s focus on debating, help develop tolerance and resilience.”
The school’s strategy of grouping the most-able students into separate classes allows teachers to plan for high levels of challenge and enquiry, and the subsequent high levels of achievement made by students reflects this.- Ofsted Report 2015
