About Greenwood Academy
Greenwood Academy is a vibrant, successful 11-18 Academy situated in the heart of Castle Vale. We moved into our £20 million new build in September 2017 with world class facilities. Coupled with this is a highly professional staff and students who are keen to learn. As a result of being oversubscribed, we are embarking on the next wave of recruitment for the highest calibre of staff who can help us to grow our school community.
So why work at Greenwood Academy?
1. Teaching and Learning
Quality first teaching is at the core of everything we do. To support this, our evidence-based Teaching and Learning vision incorporates Barack Rosenshine’s Principles of Direct Instruction. Literacy is a significant part of every lesson. Standard written and Spoken English is insisted upon and modelled by all teachers to ensure our students can achieve their potential.
Most importantly, we do not grade observations at Greenwood Academy, we believe that regular, developmental feedback creates a strong, supportive and vibrant culture.
We have a firm and fair approach to behaviour, systematically supported by senior staff; all pupil detentions are centralised and run by senior staff every day. Teachers are therefore able to prioritise the planning and teaching of their subject.
3. Work-life balance
We are committed to reducing teacher workload and making sure that everything we do has a positive impact on pupil learning. This means we have a slimmed-down marking policy, a centralised knowledge focused homework policy, no parents evenings and a minimal assessment, reporting and data entry cycle.
Although we are judged to 'require improvement', both our sixth form and leadership management were judged 'good' by Ofsted in March 2018.
We are proud to be part of Academies Enterprise Trust.
We are a national network of over 60 primary, special and secondary academies. We are passionately committed to inspiring children and young people.
We’ve undergone considerable change over the last two years. Bar the name above the door, everything about AET has changed: our leadership; our governance; our financial controls; our school improvement and our curriculum support.
AET is well on its way to becoming something rather wonderful – we are a family of schools that is dedicated to education that paves the way for our young people go on to lead remarkable lives. And it’s our people who are making that a living and breathing reality in our academies.
Each and every child inspired to choose a Remarkable Life.
To gather and motivate inspirational people committed to delivering an excellent education that launches children into remarkable lives.
BE UNUSUALLY BRAVE
At AET, we choose to be unusually brave. We're not afraid to challenge wrongs, to make the right call, even when it's both unusual and difficult to do so.
DISCOVER WHAT'S POSSIBLE
We are on the search for discovering what's possible. We look to create 'eureka moments' for our students, helping them discover a world of possibilities and opportunities.
PUSH THE LIMITS
We always strive to push the limits. We don't settle for less than excellent and we won't allow our students to either. We resolve to overcome any self-imposed limits.
We commit to being big-hearted. We choose to treat each other with kindness, warmth and care, believing that everybody matters and believing in one another.
AET is also an approved Apprenticeship Training Provider (through the ESFA) which allows us to deliver a wide range of apprenticeship programmes across the Trust and our school network. To find out more about what we offer click here.

During my trainee Teach First year I was faced with many challenges, the kind of challenges unique to teaching and ones which I did not necessarily anticipate having entered the profession fresh out of University. The incredible support around me, both directly from my school mentor and the English department and the informal support given by the wider teaching staff allowed me to flourish. Feedback from observations and learning walks made me aware that other practitioners at school genuinely cared about improving my own practice, and there would be consistent follow up to ensure that I was acting on advice. By the end of my first year I felt confident that I had the tools to succeed in my NQT year. On a personal level, my NQT year has been an entirely contrasting experience. The English department’s defined and rigorous vision of teaching and learning means that there is a cohesive plan in place to raise attainment for all pupils. This vision has given me the confidence to lead on aspects of the curriculum, including designing a War Poetry scheme of work for KS3, teaching English Language A level and taking on the role of head of KS3 English next year. I would not have been ready to take on this role had it not been for the support I received during my time here at Greenwood Academy.- Pete Stallard - Teach First English
Greenwood has always encouraged me to strengthen and build on my role by attending various different courses. Since joining the Academy in 2010 as a level three Teaching Assistant, I have gained my HLTA qualification allowing me to take my first steps towards teaching, completed a foundation degree in teaching and learning support, and this year completed my top up degree in Education. Greenwood have repeatedly supported me throughout my journey and are continuing to demonstrate that in my final step towards gaining my teaching qualification.- Kim Silvers
Through the Teach First Leadership Development Programme, I completed my PGCE at Greenwood Academy in 2015/16 and am currently undertaking my NQT year. I relish in taking on new challenges and felt that I wanted to take on more responsibility. It is for this reason that I applied for the post of Head of MFL in December 2016. Having been successful in my application I am looking forward to a prosperous future for the department in which I aim to raise attainment and increase the profile of languages across the school. I am inspired daily by both the pupils and the staff around me, and look forward to the rest of my journey as a Middle Leader. I believe that Greenwood Academy has, and will be a great place for my career to grow, largely thanks to the amazing network of support that I have on offer to me.- Hannah Martin - Head of Modern Foreign Languages
