About Haileybury Astana

Haileybury Astana, (HAS) located in the capital city, Nur-Sultan, and is the second Haileybury school in Kazakhstan. It has a growing roll that currently stands at 600 pupils from kindergarten to year 13. The teaching medium is English with additional teaching of Kazakh language and history.

Approximately 20 pupils annually attending Haileybury College in the UK are from Kazakhstan. Many Kazakh parents have visited Haileybury UK and have gained favorable impressions of the type and style of the broad educational experience offered to their children in addition to the formal IB programme. Of particular interest was the broad overall extra curricular programme on offer including sport, drama, music, pastoral, debating, model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and similar offers supplementing the academic side of the school. The desire from many parents was to replicate this holistic educational approach.

Haileybury Astana has attracted considerable interest within the country and has been visited by many politicians and other prominent people including the First President of Kazakhstan, Mr Nursultan Nazarbayev. During the 1990’s the country’s capital was moved to Astana, which is a purpose built, modern, international, rapidly growing cosmopolitan city. The President was impressed by the development of the first Haileybury school in Almaty and proposed that a similar school be built in Astana. As a result, a number of business people raised the funds to design and build a purpose built school in the capital, and Haileybury Astana Was formally opened by The President. On day one the school welcomed 103 pupils.

The school initially took pupils only from years 1 to 6 but is now populated up to year 13 with the primary school offering the IPC up to year 6, and the first cohort of IGCSE pupils taking public exams in summer 2017 and IB in summer 2019. It draws on the educational values and ethos of Haileybury UK and has increasing connections with Haileybury College to ensure that pupils of the school are able to benefit from educational opportunities offered by the UK in the form of reciprocal visits, tours and planned exchanges.

The school also offers a wide range of extra curricular activities and aspires to become a strong academic school. The first cohort of IB students returned very encouraging results in 2019 with an average 34 points per student.

Continued professional development is an important aspect of staff support at Haileybury Astana. Reciprocal opportunities in conjunction with Haileybury College are planned, and the school offers both the NPQML and the NPQSL in-house in association with UCL as professional qualifications for aspiring staff.

Despite being a day school, Haileybury Astana replicates the House system in operation at Haileybury UK. with four Houses named after famous Haileybury UK alumni: Attlee, Bartle Frere, Edmonstone and Kipling. House competitions take place during the year and the academic progress of pupils, participation in school life, concerts, sport and contribution to the community are all rewarded by the House system.

The school, with its success and its profile is attracting a considerable public interest. Full details of Haileybury Astana can be found on www.haileybury.kz The website offers an overall summary of the facilities available, the academic programme, details of the staffing structure, and the wide choice of extra curricular activities which are offered to pupils. It is recommended that the series of newsletters from the Headmaster to parents, which are held on the website, be read in order to gain a fuller flavour of the school’s activities.

The Governing Body comprises five members nominated by the Founder Investors, and five nominated by Haileybury UK, including the Master of Haileybury UK. The Chairman who is nominated by the founding Investors is Ian Hunt, former HMC Head, and former CEO of Gabbitas Education.

The current headmaster, Mark Smith, joined Haileybury in January 2019, having previously spent his entire career in highly successful UK independent Senior and prep schools.
