About Kingswood House School

Kingswood House is a co-educational, independent day school from Reception up to GCSE. The school educates 250 pupils on its three acre site in West Hill, Epsom, which is well-served by its proximity to Epsom mainline train station. The Headmaster, Mr Duncan Murphy, has been in post since September 2017. The school’s aims are to:

Develop the individual abilities of each child in a secure, caring and friendly environment where they are happy and motivated to learn and to appreciate the benefits of healthy living and physical fitness.

Encourage participation, enjoyment and success in all areas of the School’s curriculum to create a well-rounded, confident child who shows respect, tolerance and compassion towards people and the environment.

Help children develop self-worth and maturity so they are equipped to deal with life’s challenges and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

Create a strong partnership between parents, children and staff to foster social awareness and to allow all members of the School community to feel valued and appreciated.

Accredited as “excellent in all areas” in their last full ISI inspection, Kingswood House is also endorsed by the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS) and the Society of Heads (SoH). The school’s values promote tolerance, respect and friendship and families are welcome from all faiths, or none.

At Kingswood House, there is a philosophy of inclusivity, tolerance and respect. All pupils are encouraged to participate in every aspect of school life and this provides a platform for them to grow in resilience and self-esteem. A rich variety of opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom, engenders an avid natural curiosity and propagates a willingness to try new things.

In 2018, Kingswood House was shortlisted for a prestigious Independent School of the Year award for the inception of its bespoke Kingswood House Way, a tapestry of values-based education, and the school has been nominated again as an Independent School of the Year finalist in 2021.

The three precepts of Respect, Integrity and Endeavour underpin the nucleus of “The Kingswood House Way”. Kingswood House believes that the need for young people to have emotional tools, such as resilience, as well as academic knowledge, has never been more important. The school’s strapline is “A Preparation for Life”. This philosophy is designed to ensure that Kingswood House pupils are well-prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world beyond the school gate.

Founded in 1899, Kingswood House was formerly a preparatory school for boys up to the age of thirteen. In September 2016, the school embarked on its expansion up to GCSE and also moved to co-education in September 2021.

The school is organised across three divisions by age-range, each of which is served by its own divisional head who has an academic and pastoral overview on a day to day basis:

Lower Prep Reception – Year 4

Upper Prep Year 5 – Year 8

Seniors Year 9 –Year 11

Kingswood House has, in recent years, cultivated a strong niche as a mainstream school with an exceptional level of academic and pastoral support for its pupils. The Study Centre is situated in the Main House and serves approximately 50% of the student body; it offers a broad range of inclusion and extension for boys and girls across the age and ability range.

Recent GCSE results show a high level of value-added and compare favourably with statistics from both the maintained and independent sectors. In 2021, the school’s leavers achieved 100% Level 9-4 with 66% Level 9-6 and all moved on to their sixth from destination of choice.
