About Portsmouth Academy
Ofsted April 2017 - The Portsmouth Academy is a GOOD school with OUTSTANDING leadership and management.
The Portsmouth Academy is the second highest performing school across Hampshire
The Thinking Schools Academy Trust is the best performing Multi Academy Trust in England for KS4 progress.
The Portsmouth Academy became a co-educational establishment from September 2017. Our aim is to transform the life chances of our pupils through our motto of 'Aspire and Achieve'. For the last three years, we have been on a journey to become a fully accredited Thinking school. Less than 100 schools internationally have achieved this prestigious status, which is awarded by the University of Exeter. You can read their full report by clicking here. The Portsmouth Academy (TPA) is becoming an advanced thinking school (one of only a few in the country); a school which applies research evidence from brain science to improve learning.
The Portsmouth Academy has become the school of choice within the City and has seen its Y7 PAN more than double for September 2018 intake.
The school is led by Principal, Miss Natalie Sheppard, who is an experienced Headteacher and has driven the school from strength to strength since returning to her home town of Portsmouth to join the school.
We credit the thinking school philosophy with helping our young people to establish habits of excellence which lead them to outstanding success in their public examinations. The 2016 exam results place the school as one of the highest performing in the city. 64% of students achieved the gold standard of 5 or more GCSEs at A*-C, including English and Maths, and 75% achieved 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C. More than 1 in 4 grades was an A*/A showing that the most able students achieve extremely well with us. Indeed, we are proud of how we support every student, no matter what their academic starting points. According to government measures, the progress we make with our students is outstanding.
Students who received their GCSE results in the summer of 2017 have broken new records for The Portsmouth Academy and for The Thinking Schools’ Academy Trust, with TSAT being the top performing academy trust in the country.
After an amazing set of results at The Portsmouth Academy in 2016 it was difficult to see how this could be improved upon but the hard work of both the students and staff at this academy has made this possible.
This cohort of students, 80% of whom were from disadvantaged backgrounds, achieved above national average in English and Maths at both a standard pass (grade 4) and a strong pass (grade 5). A staggering 71% of all English grades were at grade 4 or above and 57% at grade 5 or above. Maths also performed extremely well with 73% of students achieving a grade 4 or above and 54% a grade 5 or above.
We use rewards and competition to inspire our students and to build their self-esteem through celebrating things that are of intrinsic value, rather than superficial. This is supported through our house system - our houses are named after Greek philosophers as they were the original lovers of wisdom. Staff well-being is very important to us. As well as personal planning time, we give additional 'directed' time for marking, and for staff to do something they enjoy, such as yoga, painting or football. We want our staff to enjoy coming to work and the camaraderie that goes with being part of our community.
At TPA, you will find a very supportive school committed to great teamwork. We are proud of what we do and take a 'thought-full' approach to innovation and change. We are an oversubscribed school with a £5.3 million investment to improve our buildings and facilities, with work expected to commence in January 2019.
As a member of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, the school is at the forefront of pedagogic practice. Our Trust is a rapidly expanding family of primary and secondary schools within the Portsmouth area. The good behaviour of our students, and collegiate atmosphere amongst staff, makes the Academy a wonderful place to work.
It places cognitive approaches at the heart of its provision and anticipates being formally accredited as a Thinking School by the University of Exeter in the summer of 2016. Holcombe Grammar works closely with all of the Trust's schools. All of our schools, both secondary and primary work cohesively together across key stages and departments to share best practice.
As part of The Thinking Schools Academy Trust, we benefit from working cohesively as a family of schools for the benefit of our children, and for the adults who work here too. The Trust supports with planning, trips, events, CPD and much more to ensure that all of our teachers are fully supported, enabling them to ensure that they can deliver the best learning that we can offer. Our mission is to "transform life chances"; at The Thinking Schools Academy Trust we believe education has the power to change lives and children only have one chance to get this right.
To ensure all our academies focus on our mission school leaders translated our mission to core values that would be demonstrated and evident in all our Academies:
Child First, Aspire, Challenge, Achieve
