About Pudsey Grangefield School
Introduction from the Principal
Thank you for the interest you have shown in the recently advertised post at our school.
Pudsey Grangefield School is a heavily oversubscribed mixed comprehensive secondary school located in the heart of the market town of Pudsey. Situated between Leeds and Bradford the town has valued its independence from its two larger neighbours. The school has 1200 students with a thriving Sixth Form of 220 students all taught in a state of the art building. The innovative and unique design of the building creates a calm atmosphere very different to many secondary schools.
The school has a long tradition in the town, being established as Pudsey Grammar School in 1908. Although the school is taught in a state of the art building, our core values are highly traditional based on the goal of ensuring that every student reaches their true potential. Our school is not just about the students gaining knowledge and qualifications although these are extremely important. We believe in teaching young people core values of decency, social skills and how to be a good citizen in an ever changing world. We want their character to develop and grow and for them to leave us with an inquiring and independent mind. We want our students to gain the best qualifications they are capable of whilst experiencing a range of opportunities which are second to none. As a result, the school is extremely popular with our community and is significantly over-subscribed every year.
Our Sixth Form has grown in recent years and we now have 220 post-16 students studying at Pudsey Grangefield. This allows us to run a range of courses and provides our staff with valuable experience teaching subjects at this level.
Our staff are exceptional in their dedication and commitment to the students. Relationships in the school are extremely strong and this underpins the ethos of the school. Teaching and learning is the key focus of the organisation and everything that we do is designed to ensure that the classroom experience for the students is excellent.
We pride ourselves in the fantastic support and professional development that we offer to staff which ensures that they are equipped with all the necessary skills to deliver excellent lessons to the students on a daily basis.
The school is a foundation Trust school and our partners include global companies such as HSBC bank, the IT company RM, Warwick University which is member of the Russell Group of UK universities, alongside leading local business and training
providers Appris and the Place group. The school has already felt the benefit with many staff completing MAs through Warwick University. We will be further developing the work of the Trust over the next year so that more staff and students experience the benefits of these excellent links.
This is an exciting time to join Pudsey Grangefield School. I was appointed as Principal in September 2014 and the school was inspected by Ofsted shortly after. The judgement was based on a disappointing set of GCSE exam results in 2013. However there have been significant improvements in 2014 – most notably in English where the percentage of students making three levels of progress rose by a staggering 20%.
The upward trend continued in 2015, where 57% students gained 5A*-C including English and Maths, and 3 and 4 levels of progress improved in English.
There are many positive comments in our Ofsted report such as:
Students speak positively about the very good relationships between staff and students. Students implicitly trust members of staff to deal with issues that concern them.
Incidents of bullying are low because the school curriculum actively promotes tolerance and respect for one another.’
Students are proud of their school. The school site is immaculate, there is no litter and uniform rules are stringently adhered to.’
The vast majority of students behave well and have positive attitudes to learning.
The teaching in English is founded on subject knowledge, is well planned, pacey and engaging.
The progress that the school is currently making was recently highlighted when we were selected by Leeds City Council for a Yorkshire and Humberside region Pathfinder project. The criteria for this is that we are a school which is making rapid progress towards being judged as ‘good’ again.
