About Putney High School
Putney High School is located on a green and leafy site close to the heart of Putney. Spacious lawns surrounded by flowerbeds, shrubs and trees create a tranquil and secluded environment.
We are a school with a family ethos where each girl encounters stimulating personal and intellectual challenges, whilst receiving care and guidance. This ensures that all girls are successful in this happy, enriched environment. The girls take pleasure in discovery and gain an understanding of the ways of life. They work together to engage in discussion and to challenge the opinions of each other and those from outside.
We anticipate that each girl will contribute in her own way to our learning environment, in both her studies and many other activities, including art & design, drama, music, sports and in charity work.
Students leaving here are conscious of their own worth, prepared for an independent life and capable of making a positive contribution to society. It is from this basis that they go on to pursue a variety of fulfilling careers.
Established in 1893, we are well known for providing the challenge of a rich and broad education to bright girls from 4-18. When a girl joins the school she will be supported and encouraged to make the most of her own gifts. At Putney the girls develop the self confidence they need to take full advantage of opportunities open to them in life, the courage to take intellectual risks and the thinking skills which allow them to make sound judgements about the world around them.
Our facilities in the Senior Department include purpose built classroom blocks; a spacious Sixth Form centre; an impressive Music building; seven well-equipped Science laboratories; excellent Art studios; a Design and Technology centre; a superb Sports Hall, and extensive ICT provision. Our on-site Junior Department, Lytton House, is equipped with a Hall, specialist Science facilities, an Art/CDT Studio, a large ICT suite and a large Library.
Tennis and netball courts in the grounds, together with a Rounders pitch and exciting adventure playground for the younger children, are complemented by regular use of Putney Pool & Fitness Centre, Bank of England swimming pool and Roehampton playing fields for a wide variety of track and field sports, and the river – we are members of Thames Rowing Club.
Well-qualified, specialist staff, providing continuity of education and community from Reception through to A levels at 18, deliver our curriculum. However, girls are welcome to enter the school at 4+, 11+ and 16+ or if a vacancy arises in other year groups.
In the Senior Department the girls follow a broad curriculum, which includes Latin, Modern Languages, Design Technology and ICT. On entering the GCSE years girls may study Triple Science, ICT, Design Technology (Textiles and Resistant Materials), Art, Drama, Latin, Classics, and Music in addition to a choice of modern languages, humanities and the core curriculum subjects. At AS and A Level these subjects may be supplemented by Business Studies, Greek, Economics, History of Art, Psychology and Further Mathematics. Our General Studies programme broadens their interests and skills.
Sixth Formers play an important part in school life, acting as role models for younger children. The Head Girl, Deputies, House Officials and Prefects are essential to the smooth running of the school and there is ample scope for all to become involved in School Council, the organisation of House events, debating, charity work, lunchtime clubs, drama, music and sport.
The Junior Department, Lytton House, provides a secure and encouraging environment where the girls grow in skills and confidence. A warm relationship is established with each family so that parents and staff work together throughout the girls’ years at Lytton House. A cross-curricular approach to learning is adopted and many visits to places of interest, concerts, museums, art galleries and theatres are included in the timetable. Wide opportunities capture the girls’ unlimited enthusiasm and enable them to explore and extend their natural talents.
Putney is renowned for its musical excellence throughout both Junior and Senior departments. Homefield, the Music department, provides spacious and well-equipped facilities for class teaching, private tuition and practice rooms. Private tuition is available in all instruments and voice. Girls have many opportunities to participate in music – three orchestras; Chamber, Saxophone, Jazz, Guitar and Recorder groups; four Senior choirs and a Junior choir; annual inter-House Music Festival in Senior Department; Junior Department Music Festival, successes in prestigious national competitions and choir tours to Barcelona and Lisbon.
