About Rosemead Preparatory School

About Rosemead…

We aim to provide a positive atmosphere and stimulating environment in which to develop the whole child. We seek to ensure that each child has the opportunity of achieving his or her own academic potential and that our children are happy, hard-working and well-mannered.

In the classroom, we believe in a traditional approach to education. Our methods are generally formal and our expectations of the children are high. Our pupils are encouraged to develop good work habits. The children can participate in a varied range of activities to develop their musical, artistic and sporting skills. We are a caring school and we hope that every child will play an important role in shaping our community.

Rosemead has a strong, experienced teaching team. Our teachers enjoy teaching here and turnover is low, so that there is considerable continuity. The staff are encouraged to enrich their teaching by attending training courses appropriate to education at Rosemead.

History of the school

Rosemead was founded by Miss Dorothy Plumridge in Streatham in 1942. The school moved to its present location in 1974. The school belongs to Thurlow Educational Trust, a non-profit making charitable trust administered by a board of governors elected annually by members of the company. All Rosemead parents are members of the company and may participate in its affairs.

In 1987, the school was elected to The Independent Schools’ Association and ISIS, having been accredited by the Independent Schools' Council.

Mrs. Rosemary Lait was appointed as Headteacher in January 1990. Her involvement with Rosemead began in 1985 when her son and daughter became pupils at the school and she served as a Parent Governor. In 1987 she joined the staff as an Infant teacher before being invited to take up the Headship in 1989. At the end of 2002/3 Mrs Lait joined the inspectorate. In July 2003 Mrs Catherine Brown was appointed as Headteacher and Elmcourt purchased for September 2005.

Success beyond Rosemead

For many years, Rosemead has been successful in gaining places for children at their first choice of senior school in both the independent and maintained sectors. Rosemead boys and girls have been awarded many scholarships and bursaries to their secondary schools which include Alleyn's School, Dulwich College, James Allen's Girls' School, St.Dunstan’s College, Whitgift School, Girls’ Day School Trust Schools etc. A small number transfer to boarding schools.

Most children sit the entrance examinations in Mathematics, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning during the year in which they reach the age of eleven.

The choice of school is made by parents after consultation with the Headteacher and staff.
