About Salisbury Cathedral School

When, in 1091, St Osmund set up a school to educate the choristers of Salisbury Cathedral, the seeds were sown for the establishment of Salisbury Cathedral School. Today the School is a thriving co-educational day and boarding school set in the heart of the Cathedral Close, in the former Bishop's Palace in 27 acres of beautiful grounds. We educate around 220 children, 40 of whom are choristers in two world famous choirs.

The school seeks to maintain and build upon the traditions of academic achievement, musical excellence and spiritual enrichment, which have developed over its 900 year history.

Our mission is to develop the whole child, preparing them to make a positive influenceoin the world and we believe a child’s self-esteem is vital in achieving their success. At Salisbury Cathedral School, we foster an unpressured environment where pupils are encouraged and nurtured, celebrating their achievements and promoting a strong sense of self worth. Our focus on the individual child means that all staff play a role in discovering strengths, and also those areas that need guidance and support.

This approach works. Our results are impressive but, more than this, the children who leave us are confident, self-assured, well-rounded and comfortable in their own skins.

Music is at the heart of school life and is undoubtedly one of our major strengths. Educating the boy and girl choristers of Salisbury Cathedral means that their expertise and skills enrich the lives of all members of our community. All pupils are encouraged to play an instrument and learn to sing. The wide range of ensembles, both choral and instrumental, is outstanding and throughout the year there are numerous concerts showcasing the school’s impressive musical tradition.

Whilst the school is famous for its music, pupils do not have to be musical to thrive and excel here. Whether it is performing ambitious drama productions, winning regional science competitions and national sporting accolades, writing inspiring poetry or creating beautiful metal-work, pottery and art, there is something to fulfil every child’s potential and we are committed to offering a broad and balanced education which prepares children for an ever-changing world.

What people say about us

I visited several schools in the area before deciding on Salisbury Cathedral School. The small class sizes and the quality of staff were big draws for me. Additionally, the school’s location in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral struck me as quite extraordinary. There was a particular moment when I walked outside onto the playing fields during a morning break that really sealed the deal though. The morning was sunny, but the fields were still a bit wet from an earlier rainstorm. There were children everywhere; playing, swinging, running, kicking footballs and all sorts. Everyone was a bit muddy, ruddy faced and laughing. Classical music was blaring from an overhead loudspeaker and a snack of oranges and water was being served. I knew at that moment that Salisbury Cathedral School was the right choice for both of my children

I love it at this school, it’s amazing. Everyone’s really kind, the teachers are really supportive and the food is delicious. One of my favourite things to do is to go down to the Pre-Prep and play games like hide and seek and tag with the little children.

- Pupil

I am very happy at school and my teachers are great. There are loads of activities and trips which I really enjoy. My teachers always inspire me to try hard, do my best and keep going if I find my learning hard. My best memories are playing and having fun with my friends every day. I will always remember building a den with my friends this term in the school grounds.
