About The Arthur Terry School

We are deservedly proud of our School.  The Arthur Terry School is a large, popular and heavily oversubscribed Academy with a fully-comprehensive, mixed, 11-18 intake. There are over 1700 students on roll, including almost 500 students in the Arthur Terry Sixth Form. Our sixth form is one of the West Midlands largest school-based Sixth Forms and is recognised by the Local Authority as a Centre of Excellence.  Our attainments at GCSE and A Level placed us as the top performing comprehensive school in Birmingham and in the top 30 nationally.

The School is situated in the pleasant suburbs of Sutton Coldfield, with good communication links by road and rail.  Our School lies at the heart of the community, accepts its responsibilities and is committed to local accountability and comprehensive values. Our school has high principles, moral purpose and very high expectations for all and of all.  Our Teachers, Support Staff and Governors work hard with our Students to ensure that they achieve well. Our Students are cared for, nurtured and helped to be the very best person that they can be.

This summer 88% of our students achieved grade A*- C in both English and Maths GCSE.  At A Level we celebrated a 99% pass rate across all A2 entries and 42% of our A Level entries achieved A*-B.

Our last OFSTED inspection concluded that we are an outstanding school and a further HMI subject inspection for History confirmed outstanding teaching and learning, provision and leadership and management. The review of our two year Key Stage 3 and three year Key Stage 4 curriculum has demonstrated our commitment to personalised, fun and engaging lessons which has had a significant impact on attainment. We operate an open options system in the March of Year 8, complemented by an outstanding programme of IAG, which means over 98% of students gain their first choices.

Standards in teaching, learning and behaviour are exemplary and the school has a range of strategies such as vertical tutoring and an extensive range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities that promote student potential.

We are not at all complacent. We have set ourselves more challenging targets, which will see us further improve as we strive to maintain our position as top performing mixed comprehensive school in Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield.

In July 2011 we were designated a Teaching School: one of the first 100 nationally and we are a School Centre for Initial Teacher Training, enabling us to train and develop the next generation of teachers and future leaders.

Our leadership, learning and teaching are Outstanding at such a consistently high level that we are charged with the responsibility of helping other schools to improve. We are an accredited NLE/NSS School, one of 100 schools being used to provide support to other schools.

We work in collaboration with six other schools in our Learning Partnership, all within close geographical proximity.  Our work within the Learning Partnership has afforded invaluable opportunities for collaborative working, local accountability and community engagement.

Our virtual Children’s Centre, delivering the full Core Offer, enables us to strategically plan and map provision for 0 and 19 year olds.

We enjoy extremely strong links with parents, the majority of whom are highly supportive of the school and engage fully in the development of their child's learning.

The local Governing Body of Arthur Terry are a very highly-skilled, astute and intelligent group of people who offer real support for the school based on informed judgements and robust yet fair challenge and support. Their effectiveness was rated Outstanding in both separate Ofsted inspections.

Academic success is important to us, but it is also important for us to acknowledge that schools are about more than excellent examination results. Whilst we want our children to succeed, we also want them to be happy, to enjoy coming to school and to thrive and participate fully in all that we have to offer, both in lessons and in the wider curriculum.  Our school is about developing, in partnership with Parents, rounded, responsible, caring young adults who contribute to the society that they live in.

As you can see, we all feel passionately about The Arthur Terry School.  Come and visit us and see for yourself!

Staff development and wellbeing are at the top of our agenda.  All teaching takes place in state of the art buildings with exceptional facilities with excellent transport lniks and on-site parking.  An attractive salary, an excellent induction programme, a laptop, and a plethora of high quality CPD opportunities within our Learning Partnership and Teaching School networks are available to everyone.
