About The British International School Ukraine

The School is split on two sites one for Primary and one for Secondary. Founded in 1997, with the aim of providing a complete education for boys and girls from the age of 3 to 18, the British International Schools in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk form the spearhead of an exciting and vigorous movement in international education.

The Secondary School is situated in the Nivky area of Kyiv. The buildings are arranged so that there is a separation of resources to International and Bi-Lingual teaching, with subjects such as Science and ICT being shared. The division allows "ownership"of the rooms by the staff, and this enables the majority of teaching to be done in a room specific for that subject.

The division of teaching into the Bi-Lingual and International programs has allowed the school to provide a much more responsive approach to the requirements on the curriculum.

The Bi-Lingual program is split 50-50 into British Curriculum, (leading to examination subjects at IGCSE and AS/A2), and Ukrainian subjects leading to the Atestat. This is primarily for Ukrainian students who are intending to continue their studies within Ukraine.

Students on the International program are from international backgrounds or are Ukrainian students who aim to study internationally and for whom the IGCSE and AS/A2 examinations are more appropriate. For these students there is a full British Curriculum, which, as above, leads to examination subjects at IGCSE, AS and A2.

Our ability to offer examinations comes from:

Assessment and Qualifications Alliance
Cambridge International Examinations
Edexcel
London Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Ukrainian Ministry of Education
We also deliver the International English Language Testing System, (IELTS), which is assessed through the British Council. We do not operate academic classes with more than 20 students. Where our numbers exceed this we divide the classes, thus providing a learning atmosphere where staff can take care of the individual.

The International program consists of the British Curriculum, which commenced which develops with Key Stage 3 in the Secondary School and then on to (I)GCSEs in years 10 and 11 and further to AS and A2 study in years 12 and 13.

Our Bi-Lingual program includes a reduced version of this, offering 15 as opposed to 30 lessons of the British Curriculum. The remaining 15 lessons are devoted to the Ukrainian Curriculum leading to the Atestat examinations in years 10 and 12.

School is about learning, both within the classroom and within the community. We provide the environment in which each student may fulfil his or her own potential during these formative years. There is a partnership between school and parents with the clear goal of the personal development of the student. Significant strengths of the school lie in its dual British and Ukrainian personalities, supported by the presence of students from 26 countries. We have an international and inclusive view of education and the world.

Students are shown how to, and are expected to,

• take responsibility for their learning;
• take ownership of their progress;
• conduct themselves with dignity and integrity;
• give consideration and show respect for others;
• involve themselves in all aspects of the school;
• participate, contribute and show leadership over the course of their school career.

The teachers of the school, with their varied backgrounds and extensive experience, provide the inspiration and direction for student learning. They share their own interests, passions and expertise, holding themselves as examples of our educational philosophy.

Our philosophy

1. Fundamental to our belief is that every human being is, at heart the same; that we are in our glorious diversity, unique variations upon this model.

2. Naturally, it follows that we are open to all races, nationalities and creeds.

3. Whilst we are interested in academic excellence, we also see to nurture the whole human beings.
We believe that everyone has something uniquely worthwhile to contribute, and we value individuals for their particular qualities.

4. We try to provide an education and an environment that enables all aspects of the human being to develop:

In all this we hope to turn out young ladies and gentlemen who are humane, civilised, and compassionate; people of substance, confident in themselves and able to inspire others; strong and steady young adults anxious to play a full part in the world and to contribute to its wellbeing.
