Job overview

The Trustees are seeking to appoint a Principal for Excelsior College with effect from September 2019 or earlier by negotiation.

Excelsior Academy is an innovative academy in its eleventh year. It works on a ‘schools within a school’ model. Excelsior is part of the Laidlaw Schools Trust, created to give children from socially and economically challenged areas the best possible education and start in life. In September 2013, we became Newcastle’s first ‘all through’ Academy educating children from age 3 to 19 years old.

Working at Excelsior will challenge you – but the rewards are huge. Successful candidates will play an important role in our continuous drive for further improvement and will have the potential to work in Key Stages three, four and five.

The successful candidate will join a successful MAT where all Academies support each other to the benefit of our pupils and their families. Our Academies also enjoy strong support from an experienced LST central team, based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

If you think you have the talent and drive to transform the life chances of our pupils, then we would love to hear from you. Subject knowledge is essential, but so is the enthusiasm and creativity to spark our pupils’ imaginations.

Our sixth form is successful and inclusive, offering a wide range of both vocational and academic courses. It has rapidly expanded in recent years.

The Trust is interested in applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates.

This is a key strategic position within Excelsior Academy which should be of interest to experienced leaders with:

  • A proven record of outstanding teaching at KS4 and KS5
  • Experience of successful leadership in an 11- 18 school/academy at least Assistant Principal level
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the challenges of leadership of a sixth form

During recent years Excelsior College has grown year on year as the majority of Y11 pupils chose to stay at Excelsior to continue their studies post 16. It offers a wide range of courses at A and AS level as well as some level 2.

Please complete an application form (Download from the Careers Section of our website ) and submit it with a letter of application of no more than 2 sides of A4 outlining the 4 key challenges for post 16 education during the next few years and your thoughts for responding to those challenges.

(i) Please summarise the academic standards that your pupils have achieved (attainment and progress) in the last three years, as well as those of the team(s) that you have contributed to or been responsible for. Please keep this to within 1 side of A4.
(ii) Please summarise your involvement in working with a sixth form in the last three years, beyond teaching your subject and the impact of your work. Please keep this to within 1 side of A4.

Further details and an application pack can be downloaded from the Careers section on the Laidlaw Schools Trust website http://laidlawschoolstrust.com/careers/. Interested candidates are welcome to

Closing Date: 12 noon on Monday 22nd April 2019.
Candidates who have not been contacted by Friday 26th April 2019 may assume they have been unsuccessful.
Interviews will take place: week commencing 7th May 2019.

Excelsior Academy is an all-through school located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. The school was first established in 2008, as a secondary school and sixth form (later split into three separate schools), and in 2012 it was decided that the school would merge with a local primary school, creating a new school for pupils aged 3-19. With around 1200 pupils, Excelsior Academy is larger than the average secondary school, and covers a culturally and economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s intake.

Values and Vision

Excelsior Academy works hard in order to ensure that the transition of pupils from primary to secondary provision is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible. As a relatively young school, it is able to make extensive use of a wide range of modern facilities and learning resources, and offer a diverse and far-reaching curriculum, with older pupils having numerous academic and vocational qualifications to choose from. Excelsior Academy also works hard to provide for pupils with special educational needs.

Ofsted

“Students are most enthusiastic about the academy and talk about being ‘privileged’ to have so many opportunities. They say that they particularly like the fact that they are respected and listened to. The percentage of students gaining five good passes at GCSE, including English and mathematics, has risen by an average of six percentage points each year since the academy opened in 2008. This was from a very low baseline.”
