Job overview

Degree Entry Programme
Academic English University Teacher

The Degree Entry Programme (DEP) has been part of Heriot-Watt University since 2008. Many students in Dubai opt for the Degree Entry Programme as a sound means of bridging the qualification gap between school and university. The DEP also supports the student in gaining a better understanding of study methods and skills required for success at university. Given the vast array of educational systems that students come from before entering into our university, the DEP experience is an extremely valuable one in ensuring a smooth transition into higher education. At present there are three pathways leading to degrees in Engineering, Management, Computing, Psychology, Fashion, Interior Design and Architecture.

The Academic English teacher will be part of a team of three subject specialist staff, and a wider team of eight in the DEP. The Academic English course is mandatory for all DEP students. The course has two pathways, Academic English for Management and Academic English for Science and Engineering. Although, the outcomes are the same for each pathway, the courses are designed to provide a more practical relevance to the students chosen field of study post-DEP. The course is delivered at the equivalent to A-Level or Advanced Highers standard.

Key duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality teaching to the students of the DEP
  • To identify and support students who require extra assistance as required.

  • Setting and marking of summative and formative assessments as well as providing feedback.
  • Attend and contribute to Course Boards and Award Boards.
