Reporting Line:  Assistant Principal – Pupil Development and Wellbeing

Tenure:  Maternity cover - Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 38 weeks of the year (term-time plus 2 holiday working weeks) The role may also involve some after-school hours


Key Responsibilities:

  • To monitor the overall mentoring of the GCSE year-group.
  • Working with the Head of Year (HOY), Learning Enrichment Department and the Assistant Principals to monitor the provision of mentoring for Year 11 pupils, including academic, teacher mentors and all other specific intervention.
  • To provide motivation, show purpose and give meaning to the pupils’ GCSE studies.
  • To provide reversion resources and support sessions for the entire year group, including addressing the pupils twice throughout the year in PSHE sessions to aid exam preparation.
  • To register that pupils are present as required in supervised study sessions.
  • To maintain a productive working environment in the Library/Study Area.
  • To develop suitable materials which will benefit pupils’ organisation and/or work ethic.
  • To encourage, establish and support positive routines.
  • To support pupils who need guidance in areas such as:
  • Organisation and time management
  • Methods of study
  • How to broaden their knowledge and understanding of their subjects
  • How to obtain subject-specific help with their studies
  • To liaise with Form Tutors and Heads of Year over:
  • Pupils who do not attend supervised study sessions
  • Pupils who are failing to make the best use of supervised study sessions
  • To liaise with subject teachers over:
  • Content of syllabuses and programmes of study
  • Activities pupils should be undertaking
  • Subject-specific issues pupils are experiencing with their studies
  • Carrying out any such duties as may be reasonably requested


The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile

  • An understanding of pastoral concerns and how best to deal with them
  • An understanding of safeguarding procedures
  • The ability to empathise with pupils; to identify, understand and help them overcome the barriers that may be holding them back

  • The ability to command the respect of pupils
  • The ability to create productive working relationships with pupils and staff
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions in the best interests of the pupils
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity
  • High levels of personal presentation
  • High levels of discretion and confidentiality and an awareness of data protection requirements

Surbiton High School has approximately 1495 pupils aged between 4 and 18. Our Preparatory Schools are divided into the Girls’ Preparatory School and Boys’ Preparatory School, and the Senior School is girls only from age 11 upwards.
