Job overview

About us:

Blossom House is an Ofsted-rated “Outstanding” specialist school for children aged 5 -19 years of age with speech, language and communication difficulties.

Adapted Curriculum is a separate provision at Blossom House School for children who have more complex social communication needs. Currently catering for Early Years, KS1 and KS2 aged children, this department provides a low arousal, highly therapeutic environment which follows the Equals Curriculum, a functional, hands-on curriculum where communication support is central to its success. We also follow the SCERTS framework (Social Communication Emotional Regulation Transition Support) to support our assessment, target setting and maintenance of a high quality, communication friendly environment.

Close multi-disciplinary team work, is one of our core values, and we are very proud of our dynamic team of specialist teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, teaching assistants, and specialist behaviour assistants who work very closely together to ensure our students experience a meaningful, holistic timetable of activities to optimise their independence and emotional well-being.

What the role involves:

The role involves planning, teaching and delivering an adapted and pertinent functional curriculum, within a maximum class size of 6 pupils, working alongside an experienced MDT. The provision will largely follow the guidelines of the Equals Curriculum, so experience teaching functional / adapted curriculums would be beneficial. The new teacher will be creating schemes of work that equip these children with the education, functional needs and life skills that are essential to them to succeed in an ever-changing landscape.

Newly Qualified Teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) will also be considered for the role, and support will be provided.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Confidence, enthusiasm and a passion for learning.

• A relevant teaching qualification.

• Experience of delivering Early years / KS1 curriculum – foundational literacy and mathematic skills.

• Experience with the Equals curriculum is favourable, but not essential.

• Experience and/or interest in working with children with more profound/complex Special Education Needs.

• Excellent English skills (clear written and spoken English) along with good reading, writing and numeracy skills.

• Experience of using symbolised communication systems (AAC) to support language and learning in the classroom.

• The ability to build good working relationships with children, teachers, parents and carers.

• Experience of working with children with Special Education Needs (SEN), in particular children on the Autism Spectrum.

• Experience assessing and supporting challenging behaviours are highly desirable for this role.

• The ability to promote positive behaviour in a nurturing environment is essential.

• The ability to manage a small group of children with social communication needs.

We offer:

• A supportive working environment in a newly refurbished building.

• Support from an enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff.

• Continued professional development and training.

• Great staff benefits which include; pension, free Friday lunch, cycle to work scheme and computer scheme, free on-site parking, next to Motspur Park Station.
