About The School:

Underley Garden School is an Ofsted Outstanding School and outstanding children’s and adults home. Our adults have a range of complex needs associated with autism and learning disabilities, including complex communication, sensory and behavioural needs associated with their disabilities.

There are three Adult homes, which are part of Underley- one in Kirkby Lonsdale, one in Lindale, one in Grange-over-Sands. At times, you may be required to work across all three sites. 

Underley is situated within a beautiful countryside setting, on the edge of the Lake District, near the town of Kirkby Lonsdale.

About the Role:

From day one, we will train and support you, ultimately developing you into a care professional.

As an Adult Support Worker, you will work shifts and will be required to attend 2 additional monthly training sessions.


During your day, you will be working with the adults within their day to day lives; Cook with them, play games and do activities, help them within their day and night routines and assist with the personal care and emotional support needs the Adults may have. A key responsibility is to Safeguard all who are in our care and ensure they are safe and healthy.

Other duties include liaising with other staff, working to agreed care plans and keeping the home clean and tidy.

This is a challenging and physically demanding job but highly rewarding. All of our Adults have complex needs associated with autism, communication and learning disabilities. They can present with complex communication needs and challenging behaviour associated with their disability. You will be extensively trained in how to support our young people positively and how to intervene and deescalate situations as required.


Who we need?

This role doesn’t require any experience, just an individual who is friendly, compassionate, resilient, and calm under pressure and who has the desire to learn and work with adults with complex needs.

In return, we will provide you with full training. This includes a week induction at the start of employment covering various training courses including Team Teach, Autism awareness, Safeguarding and Medication awareness.

We also pay for and support you in obtaining a Level 3 Health and Social care qualification, if you are successful; you will be enrolled after your probation and will need to complete it within a year and a half.


Key responsibilities:

  • To record a log, details of incidents etc., as required by policy and procedure
  • Support with a high level of personal care when required

Essential criteria:

You must be willing to partake in physical intervention training and utilise this training, if needs must. 

You must be able to get to the site for shifts with ease. A driving licence is desirable in order to support young people to access activities and home visits.

We operate on a 24/7 basis so our rotas include weekend work and sleep ins.

The day shift starts from 9am until 9pm. There is a handover period at the start and end of each shift. Sleeps in are 9pm – 9am but you will need to be up and dressed to start the morning tasks at 7.30am.

We work on a 2-week fixed rota over the year. One week you will be required to work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the next week you will be required to work Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. Working hours in the week differ but work out at an overall figure over the year of 43.5 hours per week. This includes training hours also.

You may not be required to sleep in after every shift but you must be prepared to do so.

Sleep ins are paid at £52.50 per night. Overtime is paid at £10.75 per hour.
