The Learning Curve – 16-19 Education

Sussex Downs College has evolved over the years as a result of a merger between Lewes Tertiary College and Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology in 2001 and the additional merger of Park College in 2003. The College now has three main campuses at Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven and centres in Hailsham and Uckfield.

The College now has three sixth form centres for 16-19 year olds; Park College, Eastbourne Vocational College (EVoC) and Lewes 6th Form College. Overall pass rates for both Park and Lewes over the last two years have averaged 98 per cent. In a recent Ofsted inspection Sussex Downs College received a very positive report; particular praise was given to leadership and management, success rates and quality of teaching at the College.

Each of the Colleges has its own unique make up. Eastbourne Vocational College (EVoC) has a strong reputation for providing vocational training with an emphasis on developing the skills required for employment. There are a full range of courses available at EVoC to suit the needs of students at all levels of ability. Students are taught by industry professionals, and can train on site, in facilities such as King’s Restaurant, the Graduations salon and the Eclipse Travel Agency, operated by Travel and Tourism students - all of which offer a totally professional service. Gearing students towards working in commercial enterprises at EVoC is enhanced through its links with local employers.

Lewes 6th Form College offers courses in both academic and vocational subjects, with qualifications ranging from GCSEs to foundation degrees. There are more than 12 course categories which include science, maths, business, finance, visual arts, sport and performing arts. Excellent teaching combined with outstanding resources guarantee students can study a broad and balanced range of courses at an appropriate level. There is also the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports, fund-raising, social and cultural activities that help make Lewes 6th Form College a real learning community.

At Park College in Eastbourne, students benefit from a supportive network of career guidance and university application to support their academic studies. Park College offers a range of academic and pre-vocational courses and there is a wide range of subjects to choose from, A-level law students study alongside performing arts students. Courses are designed to stretch the most able, provide appropriate challenges for students at all levels and sustain students who need extra support. With many sporting, creative and social events available, students can add a further dimension to their work.
