Advanced Skills Teacher (English)

Are you an experienced and inspiring teacher with a track record of delivering results, who has taught English in at least one secondary school to GCSE and ‘A’ level and can contribute to the professional development of other teachers?

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. It’s now poised for transformation with the recent opening of a brand new international airport offering scheduled commercial air access. The Education Directorate has begun to transform the island’s educational infrastructure to complement the changing skills requirements of an emerging economy.

There are four schools on the island, three primary plus Prince Andrew Secondary School. The curriculum broadly models the English education system, so young people take Progress Tests at the end of KS2 and GCSEs and other recognised UK qualifications at the end of KS4. A sixth form study programme is available which includes ‘A’ level courses at Prince Andrew and distance learning supported programmes.

As the Lead of the English Department at Prince Andrew School, you will model excellent teaching and help develop the subject further. Your valuable support and advice to teachers and trainers in this specialist subject will develop the skills and knowledge of local staff in this subject.

You will work with colleagues to develop and implement schemes of work for KS 3, 4 and 5, taking a lead in monitoring and assessing student performance. You must plan, prepare and deliver appropriate schemes of work and provide high quality English teaching across the 11–18 age range with CPD for colleagues and effective management of resources and equipment.  Your ability to engage and motivate students of across a wide range of abilities is a key requirement for this role.

Qualified to degree level or equivalent with a recognised UK teaching qualification, you should have knowledge of the range of GCSE and ‘A’ level courses available for English and of the secondary curriculum relevant to English. With excellent verbal and written communication, including the use of information and communications technology, you must show strong leadership and negotiating talents, diplomacy and sensitivity and outstanding teaching and training skills.
