Job overview

Winchester College seeks to appoint a Head of Strings from September 2023, but the school would be happy to discuss an earlier or later start date with candidates at interview.

Music has been central to life at Winchester College ever since its foundation in 1382 when William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester made provision for 16 choirboys, Quiristers, who still provide the treble line for the Chapel Choir.

The Music Department is one of the leading departments in the country, with two thirds of the pupils learning an instrument, while many learn two or three. There are over 700 individual instrumental lessons given each week. Pupils can study music at IGCSE and A level, and many go on to read music at university. The Music School offers excellent facilities for music-making, with a large rehearsal and concert hall, 50 teaching and practice rooms, a fully-equipped music technology classroom, recording studio, editing suite, percussion studio and rock room.

The Head of Strings will join a thriving and committed department of six other music staff, a Music Administrator and 50 visiting music teachers. The Head of Strings is influential in inspiring and developing young musicians across the College through creative leadership, example and innovation. 13+ music award holders are often Grade 8 or diploma standard, and there are a large number of pupils for whom string playing has been a part of their life for as long as they can remember.
