Job Specification

Reporting to the Head of Art & Design at Wetherby Preparatory School.

We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic graduate to support our Art & Design department in this busy Prep School for boys. The Art Department has recently expanded to include 3 new Art Rooms. This includes a ceramics studio and a range of digital DT equipment and machinery. A specialism in ceramics, and an ability to demonstrate making skills and participate in the delivery of lessons are desirable. This role would suit someone who has a thorough practical and theoretical Art & Design knowledge and who has an interest in working with children.

The selection process will include a lesson, during which you will support the Head of Art during a classroom lesson, tour of the building and an interview with the Head of Art and Headmaster. You are asked to bring a portfolio demonstrating practical skills and artwork.

The Art Technician will be required to provide general assistance to the Art Department. This will include (but not limited to):

1)   Providing practical assistance to pupils during Art & Design lessons;

2)   Assisting with the supervision of pupils as they use Design and Technology equipment and providing demonstrations of safe practice.

3)   Setting up and clearing away lessons and creative clubs;

4)   Monitoring and maintaining stock, equipment, resources, and art storage spaces; including the Art Vault, Kiln, and Drying Room.

5)   Making prototypes to use in lessons. There will be opportunity to develop projects to be included in the curriculum.

6)   General administration work for the classwork including, but not limited to, printing, photocopying, and laminating;

7)   Preparing clay, stretching screens and canvases;

8)   Keeping tools and equipment serviced and in good working order;

9)   Risk Assessments for the Art Department.

10) Attending training as required.

11) Managing safe storage of all equipment to ensure that children do not have access to any hazardous items. This includes making sure all sharps and power tools are locked away and isolator switches are working and used.

12) Arranging servicing as required. Responsibility for safe running of the kiln and pottery wheels.

13) Mounting artwork for displays and exhibitions; Managing Art Department displays around the school. Support colleagues with display work in school and provide assistance, resources and tools when requested. Including photography of works for the Creative Arts Catalogue.

14) Preparing audit sheets for marking and naming work, organising storage areas;

15) Assisting with, and creating, staging and props for school productions;

16) Contribute to the life of the school through effective participation in meetings and school events.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess the following experience, qualifications and qualities:

a)       Art and/ or Design Degree or equivalent;

b)       IT design skills not essential but welcomed

c)       Knowledge of ceramics spaces and kilns.

d)      Ability to create, or willingness to learn how to create visually stimulating displays

e)      Energy and commitment for the post and the ability to work in harmony with colleagues and desire to work with children;

f)      Ability to work constructively, flexibly and with initiative as part of a team, understanding school roles and responsibilities

g)     Excellent organisational skills;

h)     Sympathy with, and a readiness to support, the school’s educational ethos;

i)      A good sense of humour.

You will have responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom you are responsible, or with whom you come into contact in the school. It is your responsibility to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy at all times. If at any time you identify any instance that a child or young person is at risk you must report your concerns immediately to the Designated Safety Officer, DSO or the Head.
