The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive and reliable individual with a passion for Art, to join the Art Department at Davenies in a newly created role.

Responsible to the Head of Department, the Art Assistant will support learning by providing technical assistance through the preparation and day-to-day maintenance of teaching areas and equipment. Candidates should have a suitable background in Art, be proactive, reliable with a passionate interest in the subject and working with children. 

The successful candidate will:

- have gained a good general education including GCSE’s in English, Maths and Art

- have a background in and a good knowledge of Art and the equipment and materials involved

- preferably have experience working with children in a school environment in a similar role

- be able to keep abreast of new techniques in identified specialist areas 

- be competent in the use of Microsoft Office 365, Word, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and willingness to be trained on the School’s MIS. An understanding of graphic software and art related apps would be advantageous. A background in ceramics would be beneficial

- be able to work constructively as part of a team

- be keen to attend courses to further their professional development

- be an excellent communicator, enjoy working with children and be able to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children, and effective working relationships with staff and management

- display commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children

- be professional in their appearance, conduct and time keeping

- have a sense of humour and be approachable and patient


Working Hours & Remuneration


- 18 hours per week (3 days from 8:00am – 2:00pm, or 2 days from 8:00am to 5:00pm across Monday to Thursday) during term-time. Some flexibility will be required during busy times, and the occasional Saturday may be required for Open Morning and adhoc workshops. Where additional hours are worked in support of events, TOIL or additional pay may be given.

Duties and Responsibilities

- To prepare equipment and materials for lessons, under the direction of the Head of Art 

- To maintain equipment, materials, facilities and services in the Art Studio in good condition 

- To manage the storage of materials, equipment and artwork efficiently and in good order

- To prepare specialist materials and equipment for use in lessons 

- To label and mount pupils work

- To provide technical support to the Head of Art and pupils for ceramics, sculpture and to assist with firing and glazing 

- To possibly assist with the running of the after school club 

- To assist the HOD with displays and the preparation, mounting and installation of art work around the School 

- To provide skilled assistance to HOD in preparation of teaching aids 

- To maintain displays around the school 

- To liaise with the Facilities Team, as necessary, regarding cleaning and health and safety in the Art Studio 

- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required 

- To assist with filing of work into portfolios and distributing work back to pupils when they leave the school

- To assist with the preparation of the art exhibition, open evenings and internal workshops

- Mixing glazes and glazing ceramic work

- Recycling clay using a pug mill

- Wedge and roll clay ready for lessons

- To help with paperwork when organising trips

- To assist the Head of Art in lessons and/or with pupils, as required

- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required 


Administration 


- To assist with ordering equipment and materials 

- Under the direction of the Head of Art, to complete documentation and maintain records associated with technical services 

- To check incoming deliveries, to unpack and distribute as necessary 

- To maintain a suppliers database 

- To review the inventories of resources 

- To assist with ICT administration 

- To help with paperwork when organising trips


Health & Safety and Training


- To assist the Head of Art, as required, in their responsibility for health and safety within the Department, including collaborating in risk assessments and COSHH assessments as required by the Bursar 

- Manual handling/lifting 

- Training on use of tools and machinery will be provided as necessary

Staff - With over 80 employees, the body of Teaching Staff and Teaching Assistants are supported by a team of office staff, a site team led by the Facilities Manager, and a dedicated School Nurse. Catering and cleaning are outsourced, with external contract staff working onsite to provide term-time services. In addition, the School hosts a range of visiting music, LAMDA and extra-curricular activity tutors.
