Job overview

Minerva's Virtual Academy is a unique online independent school for pupils in Year 9 and above. Founded in December 2020 we have become the fastest-growing independent school in the UK and recently won the 'Market Entrant' Award at the Education Investor Awards 2021.

We currently have an opportunity for a well-qualified, insightful and committed teacher with a specialism in Art to teach our Year 10 class for one lesson per week, starting immediately. The class comprises 9 pupils who are working towards the creation of a varied portfolio through Years 10 and 11 to enable them to access further study in Art should they choose to.

We are looking for a teacher with:

  • Knowledge and experience of a range of teaching approaches and techniques
  • Strong diagnostic ability and a passion to guide pupils in their learning
  • The ability to engage pupils from varied backgrounds
  • A belief in the value of homeschooling
  • An enthusiasm for making the most of technology in education
  • Availability to commit to the role until at least Summer 2022, extendable by mutual agreement

Other highly desirable skills include:

  • Experience in teaching entire GCSE/A-level courses from start to finish
  • Experience of teaching in a group/class context
  • Experience in supporting pupils with special educational needs or identified mental health difficulties
  • A track record of enabling pupils of all levels to maximise their potential

Teacher:

Delivering one weekly live lesson to our Year 10 Art pupils. The teaching rate is £35 per lesson. At particular points in the academic year, formal marking and reporting is required which is paid separately.

Content Curation/Creation Champion:

Collating and creating resources for the pupils to use in self-study, including content, activities, discussion boards and assignments. We expect pupils to complete approximately 2 hours' worth of self-study/practical work each week. A module is a 2-week chunk of work and we provide a structure template that teachers should use in each module. The content curation/creation rate is up to £50 per 2-week module of online content. Content creators are trained to upload content directly to our virtual learning platform and this is paid at a rate of up to an additional £50 per module.

Mentor:

Suitably experienced applicants may also be considered for the role of mentor. A uniquely fulfilling role, mentors at Minerva's Virtual Academy are an ally to individual pupils on their educational journey. Mentors meet with each pupil individually once per fortnight for one hour and oversee their learning across all subjects, involvement in school life, pastoral well-being, and future plans. Mentors complete a feedback form after each fortnightly meeting, liaise with subject teachers and the Headmaster/Deputy Head/Designated Safeguarding Lead about any issues or identified needs, and are contactable by pupils via their @minervavirtual.com email address. The mentoring rate is £50 per pupil per fortnight.

Benefits include:

  • Good rates of pay for part-time opportunity available with growth
  • Support in creating incredible online content and schemes of work
  • Online group classes teaching experience
  • Training in the use of our online learning platform
  • Membership of a teaching faculty with active opportunities to develop skills and share good practice
  • Opportunity to develop skills in one-to-one mentoring

It is the perfect school for modern times - combining smart technology and engaging online resources with one-to-one support, active group learning and exciting multi-disciplinary projects.

We offer pupils the flexibility to learn from the comfort of their home, anywhere in the world, while ensuring they develop the social skills required to live fulfilling lives and succeed in the workplaces of the future.

The skills we champion are self-sufficiency, collaboration, problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, leadership, and mindfulness.

We operate term dates broadly in line with those in the independent school sector.

Our curriculum for Years 7 and 8 takes advantage of Key Stage 3's flexibility. Alongside the foundational curriculum, students encounter a diverse array of topics. The key stage 3 curriculum combines the Inner core subjects of English, Maths, and Science (Cambridge Lower Secondary) and the outer core is made up of History, French, German, Spanish, Global Perspectives, Digital Literacy, PSHE, Classical Civilisation, Computing, Music and Art & Design.

Pupils commonly study between 5 and 9 subjects in Years 9-11 and 3 - 4 subjects in Years 12-13. These include a combination of the core subjects: Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry and Physics - and electives: Geography, History, Business Studies, Psychology, Global Citizenship, Computer Science, French, Spanish, Art and Music. All of our courses (with the exception of Psychology, Art and Music) are IGCSEs awarded by either Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel.

How Pupils Learn

Pupils learn through a combination of modules on our online learning platform, small group live lessons that take place for one hour per fortnight per subject, and the support of a personal mentor (again one hour of dedicated time per fortnight, after which the mentor writes an update report for parents). In addition to their subjects, all pupils take part in our cross-curricular World Changers sessions for one hour per week, Well-being for half an hour per week, Assembly for 30-40 minutes per week, and a Club for one hour per week. Pupils studying 9 subjects can therefore expect to have 8-9 hours per week of live contact time, and they structure and complete their self-guided work via the online platform around these sessions.
