Job overview

Artist-in-Residence 2022-2023

We require an Artist in Residence for the academic year, beginning September 2022-23. ISL is looking for an artist who is interested to develop their own practice. You would be willing to engage with, and inspire, our IB Art students through your art-making and creative presence - and the establishment of your own art practice on site.

The successful candidate can make use of a Mezzanine Studio space located within the Art Department, which is a light and bright studio space shared by the students. You will have access to materials and equipment. The position offers a Professional Development grant of £5000 per annum, and the flexibility to work across two sites, both of which can be used for your art-making practice.

You are likely to have an interest in working within the field of Art Education, perhaps with previous experience of residencies, and have an engaging and approachable personality. You would be willing to showcase your work, establish a working area within the Mezzanine Studio, and be comfortable in giving direction to the development of students own art-making ideas. You will help to prompt the conversations that surround contemporary art, and it is hoped, be a warm and welcoming creative presence that showcases artistic practices. You are welcome to discuss ideas with students during lesson time and assist with the fruition of ideas, skills and techniques - or even the curation of their work during our annual art exhibitions. You might also be interested to review student portfolios for Art College applications. We welcome applications from any artist looking to work in a friendly, at times busy, creative environment and willing to take an active interest in the day-to-day experiences of life at ISL. It may also be possible to work in the space during the holidays/weekends.

You would also have access to the use of iPads and Macs with Adobe Creative Cloud suite, photographic studio equipment, analogue film developing, an analogue film scanner, a kiln, an A2 printing press, A3 colour printing, a range of well-stocked resources and access to a fully equipped Design workshop. In addition, we are offering the use of a personal laptop with an Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud account. There would also be an opportunity to run after-school art clubs and liaise with members of staff within the school to offer or support creative projects. You are also encouraged to hold an end of year exhibition of your work, celebrated by the school community during a private view event.

ISL teach IB MYP Art from ages 11-16 on its Main Campus, and IB Diploma Art on its Diploma Campus for students aged 17-19. There is also a Primary School (PYP Curriculum) which foster creativity and curiosity through its Forest School Programme and inquiry-based learning. Students at ISL come from a broad range of international settings, many of whom are bi-lingual and tri-lingual. Staff are likewise from diverse backgrounds who celebrate stories, language and cultural identities.

We welcome applications from artists of all backgrounds, faiths and ages. The successful candidate will require a DBS check prior to starting their residency.

To apply: please provide an 8-10 slide pdf (landscape format, 5MB max) which showcases: your CV, images of current work, relevant web links, a written statement explaining your art practice (200 words), and 4-5 bulleted suggestions concerning any work ideas you might like to achieve during this residency. Please send

Applications to: wthompson@isllondon.org with the heading ISL Artist in Residence 2022-2023 Application. The application deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 15th June 2022. Interviews will be held the following week.
