ASC Centre Teacher - Senior School

Kingsley School Bideford, are seeking to employ an experienced ASC teacher with expertise in supporting students with autism. 

The Grenville Centre, is a new provision within the mainstream school. The purpose of the centre is to provide tailored support for students, with communication and interaction difficulties, to enable them to access as much of the main stream curriculum as possible and realise their full potential. The classes within the centre have a maximum ratio of 6 students: 1 teacher and 1 teacher support assistant, although classes are often be smaller due to students accessing mainstream lessons.

Duties will include:

•  Teaching students who access the centre, on a 1:1 and small group basis, and ensure that planning, preparation, recording, marking, assessment and reporting meet the student’s varying learning and social needs.
• Set clear targets, based on prior attainment, for student’s academic and social/emotional learning as appropriate, ensure teaching supports the achievement of targets detailed in individual student’s EHCPs.
• Keep appropriate and efficient records, facilitating formative and summative assessment into weekly and termly planning.
• Report to parents on the development, progress and attainment of the students within the centre, as appropriate
• Contribute to the review of Pupil Passports/Individual Education Plans, and participate in EHCP reviews Provide social skills and speech and language intervention as appropriate, and liaise with external professional to ensure intervention is effective.
• Develop and adapt conventional teaching/support methods to meet the individual needs of the students in the centre
•  Maintain and develop an autism friendly teaching environment.
• Maintain good order and discipline amongst students, in accordance with the school's behaviour policy.
• Communicate and co-operate with specialists from outside agencies as appropriate including attending annual reviews or related meetings
• Work effectively with teaching and teacher support staff within the centre.
• As appropriate, collaborate with the subject specialists to help plan appropriate activities for the students in the centre in relation to the curriculum topics.
• Ensure students are appropriately integrated within the mainstream school and support the smooth transition of students to and from mainstream and centre based lessons.
• Provide sensory and emotional support and regulation activities.
• Maintain the positive ethos and core values of the school, both inside and outside the classroom.
• Work with the SENDCo, Headteacher and Governing Committee to ensure the requirements of the Equality Act (2010) are met in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements.

Person Specification 

• Qualified Teacher Status and experience with pupils with SEN.
