We are looking for an exceptional headteacher who can lead our school in continuing to implement our school vision. Following our third consecutive ‘Good’ Ofsted (November 2022) and the retirement of one of our co-headteachers after 14 years at the school we’re poised for the next part of our journey – and you could be the one to lead us.
A little about us
Ashmead Primary School is a successful and popular school in Deptford, Lewisham. Our core values – kindness, integrity and perseverance – sit behind everything we do. Our vision - Through excellent teaching and care children know they are both loveable and capable – was developed from these values. Visitors, staff and children tell us that our vision is palpable through the school, from classroom to corridor to lunch hall to playground.
Our values-based behaviour approach is ‘warm and strict’ – we emphasise the importance of positive relationships with children alongside directly teaching what our behaviour expectations look like so there is clarity over these. The result is that children can be themselves in inclusive classrooms that are calm, focused places of learning where children feel safe, secure and happy.
As our vision makes clear we value both academic achievement and the importance of children having strong well-being and the opportunity to be creative.
We have recently completed our expansion from one to two forms of entry and we have a Nursery on site. Our playground is a rarity in London, full of trees and with an extensive forest school. Our school community is supportive and we have a very active PTA. Our school is well resourced with classroom-sized spaces for the teaching of music and art/DT.
We have a committed, skilful and professional staff team. Supporting staff with good quality professional development, rooted in evidence, is a priority for us.
We are very well situated for public transport with good bus, DLR and train links.
We are looking to appoint a headteacher who is able to demonstrate they:
● are committed to – and excited by – the opportunity to shape the future of education in our brilliant school community
● have a depth of leadership skills based on broad experience, enabling them to lead with commitment, resilience, flexibility and empathy for all in the school community
● are committed to our school vision and can also make this ‘their’ vision
● can influence, challenge and motivate staff to have excellent standards of teaching, focused on strong outcomes for all children
● have experience of successful strategic planning and implementation of school improvement plans and can balance strategic thinking with compassionate leadership

About Ashmead Primary School
Ashmead School was rebuilt as a one form entry school in 2008 and was expanded to a two form entry school in 2017. The school currently has approximately 380 pupils aged from 3 to 11 years of age. The Nursery offers part time and full time places for children from 3 to 4 years of age.
The school site has two main buildings, the lower school on Ashmead Road housing children from EYFS to Year Three and the upper school on Lewisham Way for children in Years Four, Five and Six. Both buildings provide excellent learning and teaching spaces. All the classrooms and associated work spaces are light and airy. The outdoor play and learning spaces are excellent and include a Forest School, trim trail equipment, a treetop walkway and tree-house in addition to the loose part resources available as part of our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Provision.
Ashmead is a values based community where children and adults are respected as individuals. Our vision is that through excellent teaching and care, every child leaves us knowing they are both lovable and capable. There is a high level of support and close links exist between parents, staff and pupils. There is a strong family atmosphere within the school. Parents are supportive and the PTA works together with teachers and support staff to put on many social and fundraising events throughout the year. Parents and members of the local community often also help out in school as volunteers.
Our support staff form an important and valued part of our team. Many of them have specialist skills and offer academic interventions or extra-curricular activities for the children.
