Honley High School is a large secondary school graded Good by Ofsted in 2015. It is recognised for its long-standing tradition of academic excellence and for its friendly, inclusive, caring approach to the needs of young people. We are very proud of what we do here, of our record of student and staff success, and of the lives that we change during the time that students spend with us.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of Science to join our dedicated and well-resourced Science department. We welcome applications from experienced teachers who will receive personalised support to enhance their professional development and teaching and learning practice. The successful candidate will teach both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, and a full range of classes across the curriculum area.

The successful candidate will join a team committed to delivering a stimulating curriculum and maximising the potential of all learners through outstanding learning and teaching. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a track record of high quality classroom practice. They will be responsible for leading further improvements in standards, both within the faculty and across the school. You will need to evaluate the quality of learning, teaching, progress and standards of achievement / attainment for students, setting targets for continuous improvement by analysing data and devising and implementing effective intervention strategies. You will be expected to work collaboratively with pastoral leaders at all levels to support the achievement of all groups and ensuring no students are left behind.

Science is the school’s most rapidly developing department. There is significant scope to further contribute to this development through collaborative planning, resource development and delegated leadership of key areas. The successful candidate will be expected to share the team’s drive, ambition and reflective practice.

Honley High School has a strong reputation locally for academic excellence. In 2016 76% of our pupils achieved A*- C grades, with 78% making expected or better progress in Mathematics and English, giving us a Progress 8 score of +0.00. We are on course to improve this in 2017.

Honley is within easy reach of Leeds, Sheffield and Huddersfield.

The successful candidate can expect:

  • A supportive and friendly team of dedicated Science teachers with focus upon improving student outcomes today to create scientists of the future.
  • Motivated students who are eager to learn and engage in lessons.
  • The chance to work with teachers and middle leaders who are relentless in their drive to deliver the best learning experiences to their students.
  • A commitment to their further development through a well-structured CPD programme.

We are looking to recruit on a permanent basis - the successful applicant will be given an initial one year contract after which they will be confirmed in the permanent job dependent on performance and meeting the standards of the school.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check. A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.

Vision and Values

Central to everything we are working to achieve is the school vision. We are striving to create an exceptional school where all members of the school community:

  • Are proud of the school, respectful of each other, socially responsible, and believe in and promote our values
  • Work within an atmosphere of mutual support, respect and collaboration
  • Are committed to individual and collective success and place no ceiling on aspiration
  • Celebrate effort as well as achievement, take risks and learn from mistakes, recognising the intrinsic value of learning
  • Place the needs of the child at the centre of learning, nurture their creativity in overcoming the challenges of today and develop their resilience to address the uncertainties of tomorrow

The exceptional school that we will create will be founded upon the following beliefs:

  • We believe in fairness, equity and inclusion: we value every child for who they are and show compassion and understanding in our dealings with one another
  • We strive for excellence in everything we do: we have high aspirations for everyone and believe that children and adults thrive in a climate of praise, celebration and recognition. We always measure ourselves against the highest standards
  • We believe in working together to protect the interests and well-being of all members of our community

We value working in partnership with others and in September 2019 we joined with four other schools in Kirklees and Calderdale to form the Together Learning Trust. This multi-academy trust, which replaces our previous Co-operative Trust status, has been founded on the principles of Integrity, Creativity and Excellence. Our expectation is that by working together as a family of schools we will be able to provide even greater opportunities for our learners and greater access to professional development for our staff.  We are pleased that many of our previous Co-operative Trust partners agreed to transfer across to support this new venture and are continuing to work with us to develop our children into well-rounded and socially responsible young adults.

Ofsted report

“The systems to check the performance of teachers are thorough and clearly identify the skills that teachers need to strengthen. The school’s substantial programme for teachers’ professional development has assisted well in ensuring teaching is good. Support and training for subject leaders have helped them to contribute strongly to improving teaching and pupils’ outcomes.”
