Landau Forte Academy QEMS is an 11-16 secondary school with academy status in Tamworth, Staffordshire. At its most recent inspection there were 736 students enrolled. The school is operated by Landau Forte Charitable Trust and is co-educational and non-denominational. The town of Tamworth is located north-east of Birmingham and has a population of 77,000.

QEMS was originally two schools, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School and Mercian Boys School, which were amalgamated in 1979. Those school names refer to Queen Elizabeth I, who granted Tamworth a charter recognising that it was an ancient market town, and to Mercia, an Anglo-Saxon kingdom that constructed a fortress in the area.

Values and vision

Landau Forte Academy QEMS aims to create an environment and climate for learning where all people are valued and respected. It strives to equip students with the qualifications, skills, qualities, confidence and attitudes necessary for successful adult life.

The secondary school provides a broad, rigorous, innovative and effectively taught curriculum that has a scientific and business enterprise focus. It provides students with a strong grounding in the areas of Mathematics and English, as a platform for broader learning and achievement.

Ofsted report

“Reading is encouraged across the academy and students read well. An allocated time every week is dedicated to students’ reading and the academy aims to foster a love of books and reading. The lowest ability students are regularly supported to improve their reading skills and current records show their progress is accelerated through well-targeted support.”
