Job overview

This is a time of positive change and progress at Leicestershire County Council as we strive to make a real difference to children and young people across the county. The Children and Families department is improving fast, and with a new DCS recently appointed we are very clear about what we need to do to become a high performing service.

Our new AD for Education and Early Help will be responsible for building on our well established and high quality education, SEND and early help services. Engagement and partnership working between schools and the Local Authority is strong. We have a proactive and collaborative Education Effectiveness Partnership that focuses on best outcomes and inclusion for all Leicestershire learners. Like many other authorities we have had to make some tough choices around early help funding but despite this there is a strong commitment to early intervention and we have ambitious plans to create an integrated 0-19 wellbeing service which will allow us to really target those who need our help the most. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for the leadership of our SEND strategy that includes our ambition to build capacity in the school system and to further develop our SEND education provision and services.

With nearly 600 staff to manage, this is a sizable and significant role with a wide sphere of influence and we are looking for a strong, innovative and inspirational leader to undertake this role. You will have frequent contact with senior officers and Members as well as Heads and Principals and other partners, and candidates must therefore have excellent communication skills, credibility with stakeholders, and an in-depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing education, early help and SEND. Strong budget management skills are also key. Crucially, we want candidates with an overriding focus on delivering ‘joined up’ services that are accessible, effective, efficient and inclusive – thereby improving the life chances for all our children and young people.

Closing date: 5 October 2018.
