Job overview

Queen Elizabeth’s School
Barnet, North London
A leading, selective school for boys, founded in 1573

Assistant Director of Music

Required for September 2020

One of the country’s leading academic schools, Queen Elizabeth’s Barnet blends a distinctive heritage and proud traditions with an innovative, forward-looking approach to providing a state education like no other to 1,250 boys aged 11-18.

We wish to appoint an outstanding teacher and musician who will work with our Director and the rest of our existing team to develop and enhance the teaching of music at all levels, taking particular responsibility for the Key Stage 3 curriculum.

The successful candidate will be able and prepared to make a substantial contribution to our rich and varied extra-curricular programme. An interest in directing the 160 strong school choir, the traditional annual carol service and other events focused on choral singing is desirable but not essential.

Work is under way on QE’s brand new £3.5m Music School, after the School successfully secured government funding to support the project. State of the art facilities will bring our booming Music department into the heart of the campus.

This post would be ideally suited to someone who aspires to lead his or her own department in a few years’ time. In making this appointment, therefore, the Headmaster will have regard to the potential exhibited by candidates as well as to their experience. A comprehensive programme of support and training will be made available to the successful applicant.

Further information and an application form can be obtained on our website  or from the Headmaster’s office.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The closing date for applications is 0830 hours (GMT) on Monday 10 February 2020.

Queen Elizabeth’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure & Barring Service. We are an equal opportunities employer.

In 1573 Elizabeth I issued a Charter “for the establishment of the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth in Barnet for the education, bringing up and instruction of boys in Grammar and other learning and the same to continue for ever.” Today QE remains a non-denominational, non-fee-paying, selective School with a mission of producing confident, able and responsible young men and, as such, continues to reflect the essential tenets of our Tudor Charter. The School has a reputation for academic excellence and our expectations are high: QE boys excel at A Level and go on to places at leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

To understand the factors behind our success, it is important to grasp two essential characteristics of the School. Firstly, QE is a meritocracy. We offer open access, welcoming boys on academic merit, irrespective of parental income, residential location or religious background. The resultant ability range and broad cultural mix of our pupils provide an optimum educational environment in which to prepare boys for life in the 21st Century.

Secondly, it should be clearly understood that, in line with our stated mission above, our aspirations at Queen Elizabeth’s School extend well beyond examination results. A broad range of enriching extra-curricular activities is offered in areas such as Sport, Music and Drama, and we expect all boys to participate in the corporate life of the School and to go on to make a serious contribution to society.

We purposely combine old and new in pursuit of delivering the best possible education for our boys. Our ambitious curriculum is progressive, yet does not lose sight of traditional academic values. And as an ancient School supported by foundation and charitable trusts, we are able to offer excellent, modern facilities on a superb 30-acre landscaped site. The School is situated a short distance from its original Tudor building and borders on Hertfordshire’s green belt. Excellent public and private transport links provide easy access to the School.
