Job overview

Additional Allowance: Available for an exceptional candidate
Staff Accommodation: Single accommodation available

With its origins in the 13th Century, the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1562. Much has changed since, but RGS continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the leading state selective schools in the country having been consistently rated ‘outstanding’.

We have high academic standards, excellent examination results and consistently feature as one of the top 60 state schools in England. Almost all students progress to university with 18–20 attending Oxford or Cambridge each academic year. We offer a huge range of co-curricular experiences, the extent of which is, I believe, unparalleled in the state sector.

Our innovative teachers deliver a high-quality classroom experience underpinned by our RGS Ethos of Learning. Exceptional pastoral care ensures that, in a large school, every boy is known as an individual.

We encourage all Wycombiensians to be self-confident, positive, healthy and enquiring young men who acquire the qualities of tolerance and respectfulness embodied through a modesty of manner.

Most of our students are day boys. Boarding, however, has a unique capacity to shape the lives of young people and RGS offers this provision to 70 boys as one of 40 state boarding schools. Boarding plays a substantial role within the life of the School.

The role

The Assistant Director of Music will enjoy a role which will enable his/her professional development and is a real opportunity to make a difference to the musical life of the school. The current Director of Music is very experienced and will offer great support in helping the successful candidate to make a success of this role. The job has two clear stands, the proficient teaching of music in class across the age range, and energetic leadership of various co-curricular activities in the Department, as appropriate to the new Assistant Director of Music’s skill set. A good working knowledge and practical experience of ICT in the music classroom and a wide ranging musical knowledge would be expected for successful delivery of the classroom curriculum. A passion for making music at every level, with the ability to encourage beginners and modest achievers as well as deal with top musicians, would be expected for an enthusiastic contributor to the co-curricular programme. An ability to inspire is a vital ingredient, as is unflagging energy. Excellent keyboard skills would be expected, and experience at running a dynamic rehearsal would be an advantage.

Ofsted report

“The Royal Grammar School is an outstandingly effective college with specialisms in language and in mathematics and computing. Staff are fiercely ambitious for their students. The overwhelming majority of parents strongly support the school's drive to give students an outstanding educational experience. Reflecting the views of many, a parent wrote, 'This is a truly excellent school.' Boarding provision also contributes well to the students' academic success. Most feel very privileged to have access to so many stimulating out-of-hours opportunities.”
