Job overview

It’s time to make your mark. On this brand new role within our respected senior leadership team. On the quality of education across Birmingham. And on the futures of children throughout our diverse city. The scope to make a difference has never been bigger. What’s more, with much of our provision currently judged good or outstanding, the moment has never been more exciting.

As our Assistant Director of Safeguarding within Education Services, you will focus on ensuring high numbers of children are safe and well looked after. An experienced educationalist, you will provide leadership to an enthusiastic team, across the UK’s second largest city, with three Heads of Service reporting to you. Your leadership of people, partnerships and priorities will have an educational focus, with accountability for safeguarding and work relating to vulnerable children.

It’s a role in which no two days will ever be the same. Working in a wide range of settings including schools, you will be at the forefront of building and enhancing relationships with a broad variety of partners. We will look to you to address all kinds of challenging issues. As we continue to move forward following our recent substantial improvement period, you will ensure that our robust policies are understood by everyone, and delivered in the form of high quality practice.

To be equal to the challenge, you will need a strong background in the education sector. You’ll bring to the role an excellent working knowledge of schools and a track record of securing positive outcomes for children and young people. Naturally, you will also demonstrate understanding of local and national policies, particularly on safeguarding.

An experienced senior leader, you know how to lead by example and deliver results through others. You are an excellent communicator with a flair for building professional relationships. Taking an adaptable and flexible approach, you relish getting to grips with a wide range of questions. In everything you do, your focus on the needs and rights of children shines through.
