The Assistant Head (Learning and Teaching) - AH(LT) - is a key leader in the school and supports the Head of Senior in providing excellent leadership. Responsible to: The Head of Senior School

The post of Assistant Head (Learning and Teaching) is a member of the Senior Leadership Team for the Senior School and will be expected to contribute to the strategic planning, development, and evaluation of the Senior School. The holder has the key task of leading and driving forward the teaching and learning and the wider academic life of the Senior School. Start is expected to be in August 2023.


Taking the lead in the academic development of the Senior School

  • To manage and lead the heads of department (HoDs) on all academic matters related to teaching and learning; to develop and maintain an innovative, exciting, and enriched academic experience for all pupils.
  • To work alongside the digital leader, to implement the shared vision for digital learning within the school.


Teaching and learning

  • To lead on all matters concerned with teaching and learning; to inspire teaching staff in their work and pupils in their academic development and curriculum improvement.
  • To monitor and evaluate standards of teaching and learning in the school, ensuring that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained, and that best practice is in evidence and shared between colleagues.


Curriculum development

  • To keep the Headmaster, Head of Senior and all staff, abreast of developments in education and particularly academic and curriculum matters in the UK.
  • To work with the relevant members of SLT to review and evaluate the curriculum, ensuring balance and appropriateness.
  • To work with the Brazilian Official Director on integration of the Brazilian curriculum with the British and international curriculum
  • To manage the process of disseminating information related to curriculum coverage between HoDs, parents and pupils through platforms and websites.
  • Oversee the use of displays around the school to support a positive learning environment throughout the Senior campus.


Pupil performance

  • To work with the Assistant Head (Curriculum) to ensure the heads of department (HoDs) and heads of years (HoYs) are using data to monitor, track and develop pupil progress, using intervention strategies where necessary.
  • To assist the Head of Senior with general and specific inquiries and issues raised by parents, pupils or staff on matters pertaining to effective learning and teaching in the classroom


Academic administration

  • To oversee the creation and maintenance of policies and to update accompanying handbooks and the staff handbook, where they relate to academic matters.
  • To oversee the production (and, where appropriate, publish on the VLE or website) of departmental documentation, including handbooks, schemes of work and have an overview of development plans, curriculum handbooks and information for parents and prospective parents.
  • To co-ordinate the submission of departmental budgets.
