Job overview

We are seeking applications from dedicated and hardworking professionals with a desire to work in a successful, thriving and supportive 11–18 Academy making a positive contribution to our Student Support Team as an Assistant Head of Year. This is a new role for the school to increase capacity and support within this team.

Our Student Support Team provides pastoral care to students in Years 7–13 and forges effective links with parents and carers to support students' learning, behaviour, attendance and welfare.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and a genuine desire to help contribute positively to the life of our young people. The role will include:

  • Being available to students, staff and parents so that all issues and concerns can be swiftly addressed in accordance with Academy policies and procedures.
  • Supporting our Heads of Year to manage behaviour, attendance and wellbeing through a variety of strategies.
  • Logging all communication to and from parents and responding or delegating and following up responses to these as necessary.
  • Providing support for all, in particular the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and, when applicable, SEND students with regard to any issues relating to safeguarding policy, including bullying, child protection, safety and wellbeing.

We are a mixed 11–18 non-selective converter academy with approximately 835 students. Uplands Academy converted to an Academy in September 2022 and became a member of the MARK Education Trust (formerly Beacon Community College Academy Trust). The acronym MARK was selected because staff who work in the trust are motivated, ambitious, resourceful, and knowledgeable. This partnership will provide many exciting opportunities for professional development and the sharing of good practice across the two schools. This is the start of a new era for Uplands and an excellent time to join our thriving rural school.

We work meticulously to secure a culture of unapologetically high expectations that are underpinned by our collective, uncompromising belief and ambition for the students of Uplands Academy and for the experienced, loyal, highly skilled and highly effective team of staff that teach them, allowing teachers to teach and students to learn. The Academy is committed to the development of both its staff and students.

At Uplands Academy, the relationships between our staff and our students are excellent and ones that we are proud of. Our staff have high expectations, are ambitious for our students, and they know them well. We pride ourselves on our rigorous focus on the child as a unique individual, including our most disadvantaged and those with SEND. We ensure that the lessons that our students receive are personalised and inclusive, enabling them to be actively engaged in their learning. We want our children to be happy, successful, and confident by providing the best possible education for all our students. We want to be an exceptional educational establishment for our community.
