Job overview

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, first-class professional with IB Diploma experience.

Established in 1896, Westbourne provides a world-class, highly-supportive day and boarding education for students aged 3 to 18. Building on our strong tradition of academic excellence, we have ranked top of the Daily Telegraph League Tables for smaller IB schools for the last three years in a row and 90% our graduates go on to attend Russell Group universities or equivalently elite international institutions.

An experienced, enthusiastic, highly professional and dedicated school leader is required to join our successful and driven senior leadership team. We have the highest expectations of ourselves and a clear and inspiring vision of our future. The successful candidate will relish working with such a motivated and engaged team, firmly committed to achieving our goals.

Reporting directly to the Principal and, as part of the Senior Leadership Team, working closely with the Chairman, Finance Director, and Marketing Director, you will have primary responsibility for continually raising academic standards, maximising student achievement and leading all aspects of the IB Diploma Programme. This will include continuous improvement of our monitoring, assessment and self-evaluation, execution of our performance management programme, development of new courses in line with the developments in the International Baccalaureate, English GCSEs and IGCSEs, teaching designated classes and setting and updating the timetable.

You will have a well-considered and highly developed educational philosophy. You will be outcome-driven with a proven record of success, possessing strong organisational and process management skills, and natural gravitas and commercial acumen. And your leadership, communication and interpersonal skills will ensure that you build strong individual relationships and a robust esprits de corp between staff, students and parents alike, and that you carry your team and stakeholders with you. You will also help represent Westbourne to current and prospective parents and students, potentially with some opportunities for international travel.

In terms of character, you will have confidence commensurate with your experience and capabilities, the wisdom to understand that greater, more challenging and rewarding opportunities still lie ahead, and the energy and commitment to grasp the nettle and meet these challenges with verve and vigour.

Considerable International Baccalaureate and independent sector experience is essential and experience of boarding schools and international students is highly desirable, as is specific knowledge of recent and continuing developments to English and International GCSEs. Some familiarity with our local area would also be helpful but is not essential.

Applicants should submit a letter of application (of no more than one page) and a CV (of no more than two pages), to gerardgriffiths@westbourneschool.com. Application letters should address the specific role and the attributes and experiences highlighted above.

Westbourne School History

Westbourne School was opened in 1895 at Ebenezer House in Westbourne Road. The present school dates its founding from 1896 when Miss Caroline Ferris became headmistress and named it: 'Westbourne House Preparatory School for Boys'. In 1901 the school moved to 13 Stanwell Road.

The adjoining building, 4 Hickman Road, was purchased in 1975 and the two buildings developed into Westbourne Senior School. Developments since 1975 have seen the school open a college for years 9-11, the acquisition of St. Alma's Girls' school at Victoria Road, after which the school became co-educational. The Victoria Road site now houses Westbourne Nursery and Junior school. Continuing improvements and the broadening of the school curriculum have seen an increase in pupil and staff numbers. Recent re-organisation in the school has led to a unification of identity into one school and the school continues to flourish, building on and adding to the achievements of the past
