Assistant Head Teacher: Curriculum

Pay Range: L13 to L17 (Outer London)

Required: September 2021

Barnhill

Barnhill Community High School is a high-performing school in West London.  Our academic outcomes place us in and around the top 5% of the country.  The school is heavily oversubscribed and has increased its PAN over the last two years to accommodate the interest from our community.  We are a ‘Stand Out School’ in the Challenge Partners Network of Excellence and have links with many training alliances; London West, IoE, Kingston and Equalitas.  Our most recent Challenge Partners review found the school to be ‘leading in all categories’.  Pastoral care is of a high standard with very high standards of school discipline and student engagement.  Parental engagement is high with 90% of parents visiting the school for parents’ evenings and the like.

Our ethos is based upon the values of ‘Respect, Wisdom, Aspiration and Community’.  We are seeking to appoint a dedicated colleague to lead on aspects of the school’s curriculum.

The Senior Team

Barnhill’s Senior Leadership Team is comprised of a head teacher, three deputy head teachers, five assistant head teachers (one of which is this vacancy) and an Operations Manager.  Other members of staff serve on the associate leadership team, such as our Lead Practitioner for English.  The team has a rich diversity of skills and experience, each with designated roles for school improvement.

The role

This role is to join our strategic curriculum team.  The strategic curriculum team is led by two deputy head teachers:  One has the remit of intent and implementation and one has the remit of impact.  However, the team works organically due to the interrelated nature of curriculum leadership.

We are looking for an experienced middle leader or current senior leader with skills and experience in one or all of curriculum intent, implementation or impact.   We are looking to appoint a candidate who has experience of leading staff in subject knowledge enhancement, assessment analysis, curricula sequencing and classroom delivery. The ideal candidate will be adept at using research pedagogy and curricula innovation to drive and monitor improvements.

We have an excellent track record of developing and nurturing talent - with many younger members of staff filling key positions.

In return we offer a supportive and solution focused culture in which to develop as a senior leader and a highly talented and dedicated set of middle leaders who are committed to improving the life chances of the pupils in our care.

Candidates

A candidate with the following skills and ideals would be very well suited to this role and to the school.

• Be up-to-date with the current developments in education which put curriculum at the heart of learning.

• Have a proven track record of improving outcomes at a key stage or faculty level through the careful design and implementation of an ambitious curriculum.

• Evidence of improving the practice of middle leaders to improve outcomes.

• An ambitious and collegiate way of working.

• A commitment to enhancing the lives of students and developing staff.

• A personal commitment to work hard and drive collaborative change.

Our Curriculum

The school operates a sophisticated curriculum that is tailored to individual students’ needs.  In 2019, student outcomes were very high in core and EBacc areas, with Progress 8 scores of +0.50 in English, +1.05 in maths and +0.89 in EBacc.  Our mathematics outcomes are in the top 50 schools in England.  Our Sixth form has grown considerably during the last two years and is the highest achieving in the Borough and in the top 6% for outcomes in the country.

The Trust

Barnhill Community High School is part of the Middlesex Learning Partnership, an ambitious cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust. We are ambitious for the students of Hillingdon, ambitious for their futures, ambitious for their achievements and ambitious for their personal development. Students are at the heart of everything we do, and as such we are driven to achieve ever higher standards.

In line with the ethos of the best schools in the country, we are always trying harder, pushing the boundaries of learning and encouraging both students and staff to strive to reach their full potential. We believe in the transformative power of education to Build Brighter Futures and aim to foster within our communities a lifelong thirst for learning and improvement, so vital in a rapidly changing world. Our mission is to ensure that students recognise the importance of learning and are equipped to flourish in the world of the future and that staff are proud of the priceless contributions they make to student’s lives.

We believe in the power of learning to transform the lives of children and young people and to prepare them well for their futures.  We believe that all have great talents and potential, and that we need to provide an outstanding experience so that this can be realised.  We are also committed to the broader community.  Our Trust sits at the heart of the local area, and has a vital role to play as a centre for education, well-being and community cohesion.

Our staff benefit from a well-being scheme, childcare vouchers, cycle scheme and on-site gym facilities.

Further information and application form can be found on the school’s website: www.barnhill.school
