Founded in 1862, the College provides an exceptional all-round education that successfully combines a rich heritage with modern state-of-the-art facilities.

Located in one of the most beautiful suburbs of the vibrant city of Bristol, Clifton College continues to lead the way as one of the best independent schools in the country.

Clifton College offers day education, flexi and full boarding and is a proudly inclusive and supportive community, with over 40 nationalities represented.

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to take on this role following the appointment of Mrs Sarah Johnson to Housemistress of West Town, one of our girls' day Houses.

The post-holder will be a member of teaching staff on a reduced timetable, with no specific need for a particular subject. The Assistant Head Teaching & Learning (AHTL) role brings the opportunity to be creative in leading the common room in developing and sharing outstanding classroom practice. It will also embrace some discrete key roles, for example: Staff Development Co-ordinator, and the ECT (Early Career Teacher) Induction Co-ordinator. It is of paramount importance that the successful candidate develops Clifton’s reputation for its excellent teaching throughout the school. It is likely that the role will develop in discussion with the Deputy Head (Academic), with whom the AHTL will be expected to work closely.

Welcoming boys and girls from 2 to 18, Clifton becomes the school every pupil needs it to be, preparing them for life in the real world, not in a ‘bubble’. We are known for academic excellence, myriad opportunities, state of the art facilities, superb pastoral care and expert staff who deliver the very best learning and development. We provide a richly diverse and connected school environment, representative of the real world. Our pupils mature into individuals who are ambitious, open-minded and spirited.

Bristol businessman Dr John Percival, who championed the benefits of science, diversity and the education of women, founded Clifton College in 1862. The College has since fostered the talents of students including General Douglas Haig and Olympic hockey gold medallist Lily Owsley. The NSPCC had its first meeting on the school’s grounds.

Clifton College Upper School is housed in historical buildings, such as the Grade II-listed Percival Library, but it boasts state-of-the-art sporting facilities, including 24 tennis courts and an Olympic-standard hockey pitch.
