Job overview

Director of Science with whole school responsibility for PSHE/RE/Careers/Capital Culture

The JCB Academy was established in September 2010, the first of a brand new kind of school in the UK, with a focus on delivering high-quality engineering and business education.

Since opening we have been consistently successful - our Ofsted inspection in September 2018 recognised us as a “Good” school with “outstanding” features, including progress in mathematics, engineering and vocational courses and the dedication to keeping learners safe and secure. Learner numbers are growing - we have been oversubscribed every year, including for entry this September.  Currently we cater for approximately 700 full time learners aged 13-18 as well as approximately 300 learners aged 16+ following apprenticeships.

We are looking for a dynamic and inspirational individual to join our Senior Leadership Team and lead our Science Team, as well as being responsible for PSHE, RE, Careers and Capital Culture.  This is a fantastic opportunity to work in partnership with some of the biggest names in engineering and design.

At KS4, learners follow an integrated curriculum which is delivered through a series of engineering/business challenges in partnership with specialist teams from our challenge partners including JCB, Harper Adams University, HSBC, KPMG, National Grid, Network Rail, Toyota, Rolls Royce, Bosch Rexroth and Parker.  STEM is at the heart of the curriculum and all learners from Y9-Y11 study physics, chemistry and biology for two hours per subject per week.  The majority then undertake the combined GCSE.  Results have been excellent over the last two years.  Physics, chemistry and biology are all offered in the sixth form, with take up in physics being particularly strong.

If successful, you will:

  • Set high expectations and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with the three Science Team Leaders to develop and deliver an engaging science curriculum that sits within the challenge cycles.
  • Benefit from outstanding science lab facilities and cutting edge ICT.
  • Have access to superb professional development and a competitive salary.
  • Work in a supportive environment with professionals who are down-to-earth and committed to the aims of the academy.

If you are a qualified Science Teacher able to demonstrate high quality teaching and the ability to lead a team we would be keen to hear from you.  This may be your first SLT position or you may be an experienced leader eager for a new challenge and the opportunity to work in a unique environment with fantastic facilities.  You must have a passion for developing the engineers and business leaders of the future.
