Job overview

Assistant Headteacher

Required for 1 September 2020

Leadership Spine Points 13 to 17

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, positive and dynamic teacher to join the senior leadership team at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School(KLB).  KLB is a large comprehensive school of 1450 students with 230 in the Sixth Form.  It is a high-performing school with ambitions to go even further.

We are looking to appoint someone for whom teaching and learning is their main responsibility. This is a new role, and one that should interest any potential applicant who is excited about what happens in the classroom every day. Teaching is our core business, takes priority over all other school aspects and is something that we are looking to develop significantly over the coming years.  We are therefore looking to appoint someone who is an outstanding classroom practitioner, who will be comfortable working alongside teachers at all points in their careers and who has an obvious passion for teaching and learning.

We believe the job role will be challenging yet very rewarding, providing opportunities to make a genuine impact with both students and colleagues. Alongside the teaching and learning role sits responsibility for disadvantaged students and alternative provision. Undoubtedly, the best way to further the progress of disadvantaged students is to improve the quality of teaching in the classroom and to equip them with the skills to enhance their capacity to learn. There will always be students who struggle to access the curriculum and for whom some form of alternative provision is necessary. We have started to develop this part of the school’s work and we are excited about the possibilities ahead to make KLB a school that works for as many students as possible.

We want to see a visible leader, someone who is out and about as far as possible, despite obvious demands on their time, and we want a colleague who will give willingly to wider whole-school events. We believe there are always times in the day for laughter, so we do wish to recruit someone who can maintain perspective even when under pressure.

Find further detail, job description and person specification in the Information Pack. For wider appreciation of the school please download the General Information.

Please apply by completing an application form and writing a letter, of no more than two sides, specific to our context and the role.

Closing date for applications: Noon on Monday 24 February

Thank you for your interest in a teaching post at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School.

The school is a highly successful mixed 11-18 comprehensive school in very attractive rural surroundings.  We have 1465 students on roll including 212 in the sixth form.  Our intake includes children from the local town, the surrounding villages and also some from the communities of Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Berkeley and Dursley.  The school has an excellent local reputation and is over-subscribed.

We are committed to helping every child in the school to enjoy their education and to make the best possible progress in academic terms and also in their personal development.  These priorities mean that our students can leave the school with great results, with the knowledge and confidence necessary to enable them to be successful in their continuing education and to be well prepared for adult life.

For main scale teaching posts, we welcome applications from experienced teachers as well as those who will be newly qualified in September.  If you are currently an Initial Teacher Training student, you really should consider applying as this is a great school for newly qualified teachers.  We have up to ten Initial Teacher Training students here every year and when posts become available in their subject areas, they often make applications which demonstrates their informed view of the school.  It is a large school which offers a wide range of opportunities for staff in so many ways, from professional development to joining in with overseas visits.  Staff morale is high with very low staff turnover which, again, reflects the school’s stability and the excellent working environment.

Wotton-under-Edge is close to junction 14 on the M5 and is within easy travelling distance from Bristol, Gloucester and other areas such as Stroud to the north and Portishead to the south.

Please have a look at our website.  We hope that you do make an application to the school and we look forward to meeting you in interview.
