At TBSHS, our Assistant Headteachers play a key role in the strategic development and direction of the school, and share the collective responsibility of embedding our core values of Commitment, Aspiration, Respect, Integrity and Community.  This is an opportunity to be a part of a strong Senior Leadership Team that is committed to improving outcomes and experiences for students, and developing the expertise and practice of all staff.

The specific responsibilities of the role are open and will be shaped dependent on the strengths and ambitions of the successful candidate.  As an Assistant Headteacher you will have the opportunity to lead on some important whole-school responsibilities, examples of which include: curriculum development, assessment & reporting, the enrichment programme, community links, CEIAG, systems and procedures, digital development, progress and standards, behaviour management, inclusion, student welfare and safeguarding, professional & leadership development, teaching and learning.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable track record of success, be able to challenge and motivate students, have excellent communication skills and possess strong leadership qualities. As a member of SLT, you will also contribute to the effective running of the whole school.

We were graded Outstanding in every category by Ofsted in March 2017.

Educating approximately 1200 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a thriving co-educational sixth form of 360 students, with over one hundred girls on roll. Around 90% of our GCSE students achieve grade 4+ in both English and Maths, and we have achieved a positive Progress 8 score every year since its inception, with a high of +0.55, despite the national average for boys being -0.28. At A-Level we generally achieve an A* - B pass rate of around 60% with good numbers of Oxbridge and medicine places gained each year. We have a strong ethos, based on high expectations and standards for all, a committed and supportive staff who deliver high quality, engaging lessons and well-behaved students with excellent attitudes to learning. We are due to re-locate to a brand new ‘state of the art’ school on a development site less than half a mile from our current location, in January 2023. This exciting project will provide us with a fantastic new learning environment, supported by cutting edge technology, and huge opportunities for the future.

The school provides a supportive environment in which all staff have excellent opportunities to develop their careers. A formidable range of extra-curricular activities are available to students which include numerous overseas trips, languages exchanges, cultural visits, first class fixture cards in all major sports, a diverse and high quality music and drama programme, DofE, Model UN conference, Young Enterprise, debating, public speaking and much more. Providing opportunities to develop character and leadership in our students is central to our ethos.
