Job overview

Assistant Headteacher

L13-17

Required from September 2023

Applications welcome from those of no faith, the Catholic faith or of any faith, as long as you can be supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

We require an inspiring and ambitious Assistant Headteacher. The successful candidate will join a Senior Team who are utterly committed to developing staff and students to be the best they can be. They will need to be someone who can demonstrate: impact in role, over a minimum of 3 years in a middle-leadership role, or SLT, bringing about developments in teaching and learning, and curriculum improvement; experience in more than one school; the requisite personal resilience, emotional stability and intelligence, commitment and stamina to be a school leader.

The precise nature of the job description will be negotiated to suit the successful candidate’s interests and abilities, but will certainly include responsibilities from the Quality of Education aspect of the inspection framework.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity. Our Surveys this year showed that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Marys, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents. We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future. Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we have expanded to 6FE, with our current Year 8 having seven forms of entry. We have also won over £7m in capital bids in the last 5 years and are enjoying brand new cutting-edge facilities as a result. The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area. KS4 performance is strong, with well above average P8 figures posted before the pandemic, and forecast to remain at these levels from the summer 2023. At A Level we have a high proportion of A*-B Grades with students enrolling at Russell Group Universities, including Oxbridge, and a range of high-quality degree apprenticeships.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants. St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants.

Please complete the School’s application forms which are available online, a letter is not required. For further information please contact St Mary’s Catholic School on tel: 01279-654901 or email the Headteacher at t.johnston@stmarys.net or the Head’s PA at headspa@stmarys.net

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
