Assistant Headteacher - Inclusion

Lakenham Primary is a forward-thinking school, which has school staff who are outward looking, child centred and willing to try out new ideas. The school is a larger  than average Norfolk Primary being a two form entry Foundation school with up to 480 pupils on roll. It is situated in Norwich city, in an area of significant socio-economic contrasts, including a high level of mobility. 

Lakenham Primary School is seeking to appoint an Assistant Headteacher with an Inclusion focus. To be considered for this role candidates must be confident, experienced teachers been involved in successful school-wide leadership or a current accomplished Assistant Headteacher in a smaller school, who has more to offer. They must have a track record of at least 'Good' or 'Outstanding' primary classroom practice, desirably across the primary school age range. Someone who has led a team and has the ability to provide inspiration and motivation around which a team can find cohesion and success. The successful candidate will have the ability to raise the performance of those around them and the ability to work well with parents and governors. 

This role is class based, the number of days and year group depends on the needs of the school. 

Pupil Premium, Safeguarding, EAL, G&T

  • Ensure that all children requiring additional support are identified and their learning targets are robustly reviewed.
  • Work with a range of staff with the identification of barriers to learning.
  • Being a designated safeguarding lead (DSL1) with a team of nine DSL’s, four of them PSA’s. Including having the confidence to raise professional disputes with outside organisations if they are not following practise or supporting the children from the school appropriately.
  • Analyse progress, attainment and achievement data for all children with English as an Additional Language and Pupil Premium ensuring the correct level of support is provided individually and collectively.
  • Lead on the identification of children with additional Gifts and Talents ensuring that their unique needs are planned for and delivered. 

Behaviour, Attendance and Punctuality

  • Support staff in embedding a positive approach to behaviour management, by undertaking a SLT role from the schools Responsible Behaviour Policy. Providing training for new staff in the practise expected within the school environment.
  • Support the inclusion of all learners into school by leading on issues associated with attendance and absence.
  • Support all staff to work with learners in creative ways to promote regular, punctual, purposeful attendance, including ensuring learning that has been missed is identified and acted on.
  • Have an enthusiasm which motivates and supports all staff and encourages a shared understanding of the contribution they can make to all aspects of learners lives.
  • To maintain and develop effective communication and links with parents and to provide a solution focused approach regarding learners’ well-being and achievement.
  • Have strategic oversight in the implementation of school monitoring systems as they refer to analysis and evaluation of student care and achievement for areas of responsibility.
  • Lead on student voice to appropriately reflect the aspirations of all learners in the school community.
  • Provide guidance, oversight and support school wide student voice initiatives 

Teaching and Learning

  • Maintain a high profile as an example of best and leading practice within the classroom, demonstrating how individual learner needs can be met in an inclusive classroom environment which has a child centre approach to learning.
  • Ensure best practice is informed by research ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure that suitable professional development opportunities are available, budgeted, and cascaded, with appropriate evaluation to maximize impact on individual and collective children’s outcomes.
  • Provide support and training for key front-line staff in the different pedagogical approaches to overcoming specific barriers to learning.
  • Foster and lead on school focused CPD, which is effective and relevant to the inclusion of learners with additional needs, inclusive of English as an Additional Language and Gifted and Talented learners.
  • Ensure robust systems exist whereby all staff can benefit from the collation and dissemination of exceptional inclusive practice.
  • Ensure that all members of the school community have access to a range of induction and continuing professional learning opportunities in relation to inclusion of all.
  • Advocate for all learners and challenge all colleagues to work in alternative ways to help every student achieve their own potential.


  • Work alongside the Headteacher and phase leaders to timetable appropriate and comprehensive observation coverage linked to Inclusion role.
  • Monitor the impact of teaching and learning on inclusion through teachers planning, work sampling and scrutiny.
  • Ensure that monitoring informs effective adaptation and relevant next steps in learning.
  • Provide monitoring data to the School Leadership Team and governors for audit purposes related to teaching and learning approaches across stages.
  • Oversee and facilitate pre planned learning walks between class teachers and the inclusion team.
  • Oversee and coordinate feedback.
  • Specific SMART targets in support of the SIDP, as indicated by the Headteacher.
