About the School

Fazakerley Primary is based in the North of Liverpool. Our school serves the local community of Fazakerley and surrounding areas. We are a two form entry school and were last graded as Good by Ofsted in 2016. The Assistant Head will join an existing strong Leadership Team who are passionate in ensuring the best education and care are provided to the children of Fazakerley.

About the Role

Job Purpose In addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher, the Assistant Headteacher will;

  • have a major role in the strategic leadership of Fazakerley Primary School.
  • have a core responsibility for teaching and learning throughout the school
  • work in partnership with the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher to sustain an achievement culture where there is a continuous drive to improve standards and achievement.
  • help to realise the Governors’ vision to enable everyone to achieve their full potential.
  • assume the duties and responsibilities of the Headteacher / Deputy Headteacher in their absence.


The Assistant Headteacher works with the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, Governing Body, staff and pupils to develop the strategic vision for Fazakerley Primary School and to create and maintain an environment that promotes and secures good teaching, effective learning, ensures progress, good behaviour and discipline.

The Assistant Headteacher will;

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of the School Development Plan.
  • Communicate effectively the long medium and short term objectives of the SDP to all staff.
  • Contribute to the determination of effective organisational and administration systems.
  • Analyse national, local and school data and use those findings to inform the SDP and SEF.
  • Provide a clear educational direction for the school.
  • Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of policies that promote effective professional practice and define curriculum content.
  • Work in partnership with the Headteacher in the assessment of pupils and in monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching.
  • Be responsible for teaching and learning throughout the school alongside the Deputy Head Teacher and Head Teacher
  • Create and maintain an effective partnership with parents/carers to improve children’s achievement and personal and social development.
  • Provide subject leadership as required appropriate to personal expertise and/or the needs of the school.
  • Leading and Managing staff Working in partnership with the Headteacher, the Assistant Headteacher will lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secure improvement.
  • Support the Headteacher to ensure professional duties are fulfilled as specified in the terms and conditions of service for teachers.
  • Plan, allocate, support and evaluate the work undertaken by teaching and support staff as groups, teams and individuals.
  • Be a reviewer of staff performance management.
  • Motivate and enable all staff to develop expertise in their respective roles through continuing professional development.
  • Support staff development and regularly deliver training to staff Efficient and Effective Deployment of staff and resources.


Working with the Headteacher, the Assistant Headteacher will contribute to the deployment of staff. Accountability The Assistant Headteacher will support the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher to account for the effectiveness of the school to the Governors and others, including parents, staff and the local community.

  • Provide information, objective advice and support to the Governing Body to enable it to meet its responsibilities for securing effective teaching and learning and improve standards of achievement.
  • Contribute to the creation and development of a school in which all staff recognise that they are accountable for its success.
  • Present regular reports on the school’s performance to Governors, LA and Ofsted including regular updates of the SEF.
  • Contribute to the establishment and monitoring of systems that keep parents well informed about the curriculum, children’s achievement and progress In addition to the above, the Assistant Headteacher will have specific additional responsibility for:
  • Delivering interventions in school as directed by the Deputy Head Teacher and Head Teacher.
  • Leading and improving Mathematics throughout the school and supporting the EYFS lead in improving Mathematical Development in Nursery and Reception.
    This will involve the accountability for standards and progress in Maths, tracking of pupil progress and the analysis of data.
  • Working alongside the Headteacher to track pupil progress in all areas throughout school, analysing data and trends and using published and in-school data to report to governors.
  • Pupil Premium: identifying support for our vulnerable pupils (FSM, PP+ and Ever 6), tracking progress in and measuring the impact of the support provided in meeting the children’s needs; devising our pupil premium strategy; reporting on and evaluating its impact. Devising PEPs and working closely alongside the Virtual School and Safeguarding Lead to ensure effective support for our CLAs.
  • Effective deployment of LSAs in supporting and achieving educational outcomes for our pupils, including interventions, provision and targeted in-class support. This will involve termly pupil progress meetings and updating school’s provision maps alongside the pastoral team and SENDcos.
  • Ensuring our school’s website includes all information/policies regarding pupil premium spending and impact
  • Developing and supporting parents’ skills and knowledge in order to better support their child’s education

Qualifications and Training

  • Educated to degree level
  • UK Qualified Teacher Status Experience
  • Substantial and proven successful primary teaching experience
  • A track record of substantial and successful leadership and management experience at a senior level
  • A solid understanding of EYFS, KS1 and KS2 frameworks
  • A solid understanding of the new EIF
  • Experience of leading Maths in school
  • Experience of leading assessment in school
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating performance and practice
  • Experience of devising a school’s Pupil Premium Strategy and measuring its impact
  • Experience of coaching, guiding and mentoring individuals and teams
  • Experience of innovation and leadership and management of organisational change/improvement
  • Experience of managing a budget
  • Has a proven track record in leading and managing staff to support successful outcomes for all abilities of pupils, with experience of leading curriculum areas and initiatives Professional Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of primary education and the issues and challenges facing the sector
  • A sound understanding of how children learn, how teachers can best teach, and how to raise standards through careful monitoring and target setting
  • An understanding of strategies for increasing teachers’ effectiveness, and securing school improvement
  • Knowledge of the statutory frameworks and good practice for curriculum delivery and assessment
  • High expectations of pupil behaviour and the effective use of behaviour management strategies • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding best practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of the statutory requirements surrounding the education of Children Looked After, including the understanding of accountability, process and procedure of developing, monitoring and evaluating a P.E.P within the legal framework.
  • Ability to work in partnership with the Governing Body to enable it to fulfil its role and statutory obligations Professional Skills
  • The ability to communicate a clear vision for the School and how it will develop over the next five years
  • The ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of people – staff, learners, senior leaders, governors, parents/carers, local residents and other stakeholders – and to forge strong links

A selection of dates and times are available; please contact the school office on (0151) 474 3060 to confirm your attendance. Successfully shortlisted applicants will be invited for a preliminary interview and in-tray exercises on Friday 24th April 2020. Following this process successful applicants will then be required to teach a demonstration lesson within their current school/setting. Lesson observations will take place on either Tuesday 28th or Wednesday 29th April 2020. Final interviews will take place on Tuesday 5th May 2020.
