The library is at the heart of the school; a busy, vibrant facility that is well used by the school community, supporting both teaching and learning activities. The main duties of the post holder are to support the School Librarian in the management and development of the Senior School Library in order to provide an efficient service to pupils and staff.

The successful candidate should have a good knowledge of literature, enthusiasm and a passion for promoting literacy. Good communication, customer service and ICT skills are equally important for this role.

The School

Founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, the son of a Colchester baker who went on to become Archbishop of York, Chigwell School stands on its original site with the original school building still in use. However, whilst Chigwell of today is conscious of its long-standing history, it is a forward-looking, ambitious, co-educational independent school of 970 pupils aged four to eighteen. It enjoys excellent facilities, a dedicated staff, bright and hardworking pupils, and a site of 100 acres. There is a small community of international boarders.

Chigwell is a high performing school. As well as being an academic school, Chigwell has the reputation for providing a rich and full education, with plenty of opportunities for all pupils who are enthusiastic, co-operative and able. There are over a hundred teachers and together with the support staff, there is a friendly, mutually-supportive atmosphere.

The School offers a competitive salary for this position. In addition, staff at Chigwell School enjoy a significant range of benefits. The School places great emphasis on the professional development of all its staff with comprehensive continuing professional development and training.

Values and vision

Chigwell School’s motto is: “aut viam inveniam aut faciam”, a Latin phrase which means literally, “Either I shall find a way or I will make one". In-keeping with this, the school wants its students to develop a “determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around us”.

The school defines its mission as aiming to cultivate a learning community that aspires to excellence in all aspects of life, including: spiritual intellectual, moral, cultural, social and emotional aspects.

Chigwell School aims to provide a rounded education in the broadest sense, encouraging pupils to develop and discover talents and interests across and beyond the curriculum in order to help them to play a full part in the life of the school, and go on to make a positive contribution to the world.

The school hopes to be a community in which pupils develop a love of learning and are challenged to think critically, and with creative curiosity, for themselves.

ISI report

“Pupils’ personal development is excellent throughout the school. They are tolerant and appreciate non-material aspects of life. Pupils display maturity and they respect others, regardless of background or personal characteristics. They have highly developed cultural awareness and a developed understanding of British characteristics.”
